Irina Braun; Scott E. Lewis; Nicole Graulich – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2025
The ability to reason with representations is pivotal for successful learning in Organic Chemistry and is closely linked to representational competence. Given the visual nature of this discipline, this comprises competency in extracting and processing relevant visual information. With regard to the resonance concept, proficiency in identifying…

Adrienne M. Pesce; Daniel B. King – Journal of Chemical Education, 2023
Novice chemists often struggle with the highly visual nature of some chemistry topics. To make visually demanding concepts, such as isomerism and stereochemistry, more accessible to students, chemistry instructors have long recommended the use of molecular model kits as visual aids. However, studies pertaining to student model usage have shown…

VanVeller, Brett – Journal of Chemical Education, 2021
When organic students are asked to design a total synthesis of a molecule, they are often overwhelmed by the multitude of possible transformations. A decision tree is a useful tool to break complex problems up into simpler steps and scaffold the thinking process that many seasoned chemists take for granted. While many comprehensive resources…

Kiernan, Nicola A.; Manches, Andrew; Seery, Michael K. – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2021
Visuospatial thinking is considered crucial for understanding of three-dimensional spatial concepts in STEM disciplines. Despite their importance, little is known about the underlying cognitive processing required to spatially reason and the varied strategies students may employ to solve visuospatial problems. This study seeks to identify and…

Peer reviewedPribyl, Jeffrey R.; Bodner, George M. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1987
Reports on a study which examined the relationship between spatial ability and performance in organic chemistry. Results indicated that students with high spatial scores did significantly better on questions requiring problem solving skills, as well as on those requiring the mental manipulation of two-dimensional representations of a molecule.
