Patrick K. Kirkland; Claire Guang; Chineme Otuonye; Nicole M. McNeil – Journal of Numerical Cognition, 2024
Students who exhibit mature number sense make sense of numbers and operations, use reasoning to notice patterns, and flexibly choose effective problem-solving strategies (McIntosh et al., 1997, https://ro.ecu.edu.au/ecuworks/6819). Due to its dispositional nature, mature number sense is typically measured through in-depth interviews or tests of…

Carney, Michele B.; Smith, Everett; Hughes, Gwyneth R.; Brendefur, Jonathan L.; Crawford, Angela – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2016
Proportional reasoning is important to students' future success in mathematics and science endeavors. More specifically, students' fluent and flexible use of scalar and functional relationships to solve problems is critical to their ability to reason proportionally. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of systematically…

Dennis, Minyi Shih; Sorrells, Audrey McCray; Falcomata, Terry S. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 2016
This study used a multiple probe across participants design, replicated across two interventions and counterbalanced across participant groups to examine the effects of number sense intervention and extensive practice intervention on strategy transformation when students with mathematics learning disabilities (MLD) solved basic fact problems. In…

Romberg, Thomas A.; And Others – 1981
The purpose of this study was to relate children's cognitive processing capabilities and their grade level to their performance and to the strategies they used when working addition and subtraction problems. From two sets of data which assessed memory capacity and cognitive processing capacities, six groups of children with different cognitive…

Taplin, Margaret – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1995
Interviewers asked (n=10) 6th- and (n=10) 10th-grade students to solve nonroutine number problems. Task analysis of perseverers, those students who continued after reaching "dead-ends," found that students who were ultimately successful were more inclined to be flexible in their strategies. Peer reviewedBrumfield, Emalou – Arithmetic Teacher, 1994
Focuses on student organization, preparation, and presentation of simple foods (beverage, brownies, sloppy-joe sandwiches) as a way to apply various mathematical concepts, with problem-solving techniques being central to almost all the activities. Includes reproducible student worksheets. (MKR)

Suydam, Marilyn N., Ed.; Kasten, Margaret L., Ed. – Investigations in Mathematics Education, 1984
An editorial and abstracts for 12 research reports are contained in this issue. The editorial by Robert E. Reys focuses on the dangers of publishing poor research. The abstracts, each with a critique, concern research on a game for logical reasoning, wait-time and sex differences, vocabulary instruction on ratio and proportion, male-female…

Jones, Graham A.; And Others – 1992
A broad range of research efforts are currently examining the quality and nature of the mathematics instructional program in the early grades. The purpose of this paper was to report on the assessment of a teaching-learning program in grade one classrooms. The major goals of the study were to: (1) identify patterns and change in children's…

James Madison Univ., Harrisonburg, VA. Workforce Improvement Network. – 2002
This guide presents math-focused learning projects and accompanying inquiry activities to help students pass the math portion of the GED 2002. It is Volume 2 of a proposed four-volume series; Volume 1 describing the concept of the GED as project is also available. Section 1 relates GED as project to the math portion of the GED and explains how…
