Peer reviewedMills, Carol Bergfeld; Jordan, I. King – Sign Language Studies, 1980
Timing sensitivity (awareness of rhythm of lapsed time), age, and sex were studied as possible predictors of success in hearing adults' learning of sign language. The results of school evaluations revealed that younger hearing adults with a sensitivity for timing learned sign language faster than did other adults. (PMJ)
Descriptors: Adults, Age, Aptitude, Language Instruction
Peer reviewedYoung, John W.; Koplow, Sheridan L. – Journal of General Education, 1997
Discusses the overprediction of minority students' college grades in studies using test scores and high school grades. Describes a study of 790 fourth-year undergraduates, analyzing both academic and nonacademic measures to see if more accurate predictions could be obtained. Reports that the addition of nonacademic constructs resulted in better…

Peer reviewedZhang, Shuqiang; And Others – TESOL Quarterly, 1992
Multiple regression analysis is discussed as useful for studying the effect of a variable while controlling for the effects of others and for estimating the total effect of all predictor variables together. It is suggested that in English-as-a-Second-Language proficiency measurement, regression coefficients should not be the basis for judging…

Peer reviewedGerevich, Jozsef; Bacskai, Erika – Journal of Drug Education, 1996
Examines the relationship of 2 dimensions of the theory of social development--vulnerability and protectivity--in 2 samples, schoolchildren aged 10 to 15 (n=1,454) and addictive drug users (n=170). Finds that the most important protective factors act against substance use. Finds that among the predictors of the addicts some forms of escape from…

Kieffer, Kevin M.; Schinka, John A.; Curtiss, Glenn – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 2004
This study examined the contributions of the 5-Factor Model (FFM; P. T. Costa & R. R. McCrae, 1992) and RIASEC (J. L. Holland, 1994) constructs of consistency, differentiation, and person-environment congruence in predicting job performance ratings in a large sample (N = 514) of employees. Hierarchical regression analyses conducted separately by…

Edwards, Wayne R.; Schleicher, Deidra J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2004
This study provides initial evidence for the criterion-related validity of tacit knowledge (TK) as an alternative measure for selecting psychology graduate students and adds insight to the construct of TK by evaluating its factor structure, assessing convergent relationships with other variables, and exploring alternative reasons for why TK…

Sussman, Steve; Skara, Silvana; Weiner, Michelle D.; Dent, Clyde W. – American Journal of Health Behavior, 2004
Objectives: To prospectively examine demographic background, personality, perceived environment, and behavior as violence perpetration predictors in emerging adulthood among high-risk adolescents using problem-behavior theory as a conceptual perspective. Methods: Self-report questionnaires were administered 5 years apart to 676 participants.…
Descriptors: Drug Use, Personality Traits, Violence, Adolescents
Wood, Frank B.; Hill, Deborah F.; Meyer, Marianne S.; Flowers, D. Lynn – Annals of Dyslexia, 2005
Study 1 retrospectively analyzed neuropsychological and psychoeducational tests given to N = 220 first graders, with follow-up assessments in third and eighth grade. Four predictor constructs were derived: (1) Phonemic Awareness, (2) Picture Vocabulary, (3) Rapid Naming, and (4) Single Word Reading. Together, these accounted for 88%, 76%, 69%, and…

Ivey, Miriam R.; And Others – 1993
The majority of depressive symptoms, prevalent among adults (without a history of a depressive disorder) entering alcohol treatment, usually abate within 2 to 3 weeks of abstinence without specific depression-focussed intervention, but some hospitalized alcoholics experience significant depressive symptoms despite sustained abstinence. Such…
Descriptors: Adults, Alcohol Abuse, Alcoholism, Behavior Disorders
Veir, Carole – 1990
A description of rural school context variables for successful staff development and an empirical study of large-scale rural intervention are presented in this report. Drawing from research, literature, and practice based on nonrural populations, context variables are identified for implementing effective staff development intervention in rural…

Truckenmiller, James L. – 1983
The former HEW National Strategy for Youth Development Model was a community-based planning and procedural tool designed to enhance positive youth development and prevent delinquency through a process of youth needs assessment, development of targeted programs, and program impact evaluation. A series of 12 Impact Scales most directly reflect the…

Proefrock, David W. – 1983
The recent development of strong statistical techniques has made accurate predictions of recidivism possible. To investigate the utility of discriminant analysis methodology in making predictions of recidivism in juvenile offenders, the court records of 271 male and female juvenile offenders, aged 12-16, were reviewed. A cross validation group…

Williams, Robert L. – Journal of Afro-American Issues, 1975
The claim that tests of intelligence and abilities are the best predictors of academic success fails to examine closely the important moderator variable as test and criterion characteristics rather than as person characteristics. (EH)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Aptitude Tests, Black Youth, Intelligence Tests
Nethercut, Gail; Adler, Nancy – 1983
The role of anxiety, stress, and social support in predicting negative obstetrical outcomes was examined in a high-risk group of pregnant women. The predictor variables were assessed with separate self-report scales, including The Sarason Life Experience Survey, the Spielberger State/Trait Inventory, and a modified version of the Lazarus and Cohen…

Cummings, Corenna C. – 1982
The accuracy and variability of 4 cross-validation procedures and 18 formulas were compared concerning their ability to estimate the population multiple correlation and the validity of the sample regression equation in the population. The investigation included two types of regression, multiple and stepwise; three sample sizes, N = 30, 60, 120;…
