Brown, David Lile – 1974
The purpose of this dissertation is to provide evidence bearing on the question of the influence of the grades students receive on their ratings of the college teachers who gave them those grades. Specifically, certain characteristics of the grade distribution within each course section are evaluated as predictors of the students' ratings of the…

Peer reviewedHouse, Gary D. – Multiple Linear Regression Viewpoints, 1978
The three-year impact of a remedial arithmetic program on eligible St. Louis Public School pupils was investigated. Hypotheses were tested through multiple linear regression models for analyses of covariance. No treatment effects were found. The study reveals that changes in future program evaluation designs are needed. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Academic Achievement, Analysis of Covariance, Arithmetic, Intermediate Grades
Peer reviewedChapelle, Carol; Roberts, Cheryl – Language Learning, 1986
Reports on a study of the influence of cognitive/affective variables on the second language learning ability of adults. Two variables, field independence and ambiguity tolerance, were found to be significant predictors of English as a second language proficiency for international students studying in the United States. (SED)

Gentile, Douglas A.; Walsh, David A.; Bloomgren, Barry W., Jr.; Atti, Jule A.; Norman, Jessica A. – 2001
This present research reveals how beer advertising affects adolescents' knowledge of beer brands, drinking attitudes, and drinking behaviors. In addition to traditional psychological approaches for measuring media effects on alcohol-related behaviors and attitudes, market research advertising tracking methods were included to permit a clearer and…

Peer reviewedMiller, Arden; Asher, William – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1983
A recent article by Prawat and Jarvis (1980) reported a lack of support for the hypothesis that teachers' perceptions of students are sex-biased. A closer inspection shows the interpretation of multiple regression analysis is inaccurate. More satisfactory interpretations are considered. (Author/PN)
Descriptors: Behavior Rating Scales, Instructional Program Divisions, Intelligence Quotient, Multiple Regression Analysis
Peer reviewedWinne, Philip H.; Walsh, John – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
Yarworth and Gauthier (EJ 189 606) examined whether self-concept variables enhanced predictions about students' participation in school activities, using unstructured stepwise regression techniques. A reanalysis of their data using hierarchial regression models tested their hypothesis more appropriately, and uncovered multicollinearity and…

Peer reviewedAldous, Joan; Ganey, Rodney – Social Forces, 1989
Examines the problem definition behavior of 48 White families (two natural parents and adolescent child) discussing simulated problematic situations. Analyzes the effects of family background, interpersonal relations, and discussion process variables. Interprets the importance of interpersonal ties in terms of family interaction issues. Contains…
Descriptors: Family (Sociological Unit), Family Communication, Family Problems, Family Relationship
Peer reviewedNikken, Peter; Peeters, Allerd L. – Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, 1988
Describes study conducted with Dutch preschool and elementary school students to determine their perception of reality when watching Sesame Street on television. Variables studied include age, communication skills, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and data are analyzed using factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. (13 references) (LRW)
Descriptors: Childrens Television, Communication Skills, Elementary Education, Factor Analysis
Peer reviewedLohse, Gerald Lee – Human-Computer Interaction, 1993
Discussion of how we perceive meaning from graphics highlights a computer simulation model, UCIE (Understanding Cognitive Information Engineering), that simulates graphical perception. An empirical study is described that compared actual performance to UCIE predictions related to the amount of time required to answer a question in various…

Peer reviewedPotter, W. James; Chang, Ik Chin – Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, 1990
Describes study of students in grades 8 through 12 that was conducted to determine the degree to which television messages influence a person's construction of reality (the cultivation hypothesis). Research methodology that tests the effects of television exposure is examined with emphasis on the importance of demographic control variables. (38…

Peer reviewedBerman, Alan M.; Schwartz, Seth J.; Kurtines, William M.; Berman, Steven L. – Journal of Adolescence, 2001
This study drew on two approaches to identity formation, each postulating differing but complementary exploration components, in an effort to better understand the identity exploration process. Overall patterns of results revealed by hierarchical regression analyses were consistent with a process model of exploration and with the view that…

Kumar, David D.; Morris, John D. – Journal of Science Education and Technology, 2005
A multiple regression analysis of the relationship between prospective teachers' scientific understanding and Gender, Education Level (High School, College), Courses in Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, Astronomy, and Agriculture), Attitude Towards Science, and Attitude Towards Mathematics is reported. Undergraduate elementary…

Kim, Tack-Ho; Lee, Sang Min; Yu, Kumlan; Lee, Seungkook; Puig, Ana – Asia Pacific Education Review, 2005
This study aimed to identify the significant protective factors that are likely to facilitate the development of Korean adolescents' resilience. The participants were 2,677 students in Korea, among whom 442 were receiving support from social welfare agencies. The results of hierarchical regression analysis show that the school adaptation variance…

Thomas, Emily H.; Galambos, Nora – Research in Higher Education, 2004
To investigate how students' characteristics and experiences affect satisfaction, this study uses regression and decision tree analysis with the CHAID algorithm to analyze student-opinion data. A data mining approach identifies the specific aspects of students' university experience that most influence three measures of general satisfaction. The…

Zucker, Alyssa N. – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 2004
Many women, even as they embrace feminist principles, are loath to be labeled "feminists." This study presents a measure of feminist identity that accounts for beliefs and behaviors of self-identified feminists and nonfeminists, and for a third group, egalitarians, who endorse liberal feminist beliefs but reject the feminist label.
