Peer reviewedShepard, Lorrie – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
The California Entry Level Test (ELT) means are used with demographic variables to predict differences among California schools and districts on subsequent reading achievement tests. Factor analyses resulted in distinct factors for each of the subtests. The validity of the ELT was very high for its intended purpose. (Author/BW)

Peer reviewedSlack, Warner V.; Porter, Douglas – Harvard Educational Review, 1980
The authors discuss the major points of Jackson's reply to their criticisms of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), and reassert their claim that, if the SAT is judged on the basis of its predictive validity, it should be dropped as a college admission requirement. (SK)

Peer reviewedSameroff, Arnold J. – Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, 1978
Discusses the role and limitations of the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale in the continuing effort to construct an adequate account of infant development. (BH)

Peer reviewedFlook, William M.; Velicer, Wayne F. – Psychology in the Schools, 1977
Predictive validity of a school readiness test (Preschool Screening System (PSS)) was investigated through a teacher rating scale (Rhode Island Pupil Identification Scale) to six groups of kindergarten children of both sexes (N=245). The most powerful predictor in every group was the "Information Processing" score of the PSS. (Author)

Peer reviewedStrijker, J.; Zandberg, T.; van der Meulen, B. F. – International Journal of Child and Family Welfare, 2002
Used the Child Behavior Checklists to develop a classification system to categorize behavior problems of foster children and initiated its validation with 91 foster children in The Netherlands. Identified four groups: normal, aggressive- delinquent-social problems, attention-social problems, and withdrawn-social problems. Found that these taxa…

Eaves, Ronald C.; Subotnik, Rena – Diagnostique, 1989
Validity of the Cognitive Levels Test (CLT) was evaluated by correlating test scores of 48 gifted 10-year-olds with scores on the Stanford-Binet intelligence scale as preschoolers as well as with scores from the California Achievement Test. Results indicated high degrees of CLT validity in both measuring cognitive ability and predicting academic…

Peer reviewedSzlyk, J. P.; And Others – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1990
This study assesses the validity of an interview questionnaire designed to predict performance by low-vision adults (N=41) on tasks of finding, detecting, scanning, and tracking. Subjects' ratings of difficulty with these tasks were compared to ratings of trained professionals. Results indicate self-report may be of some value in predicting…

Peer reviewedPulakos, Elaine D.; And Others – Personnel Psychology, 1988
Demonstrated that measures of predictor constructs had predictably different patterns of correlations with different criteria. In study of Navy recruiters (N=267), individual personality scales had significantly different relationships with three different rating criteria. In study with Army enlisted soldiers (N=8,642), cognitive ability and…

Peer reviewedBoldt, Robert F. – Language Testing, 1992
The assumption called PIRC (proportional item response curve) was tested in which PIRC was used to predict item scores of selected examinees on selected items. Findings show approximate accuracies of prediction for PIRC, the three-parameter logist model, and a modified Rasch model. (12 references) (Author/LB)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, English (Second Language), Factor Analysis, Item Response Theory
Peer reviewedGoldberg, Edith L.; Alliger, George M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1992
Metanalysis of 27 studies dealing with psychology students and the Graduate Record Examinations' (GRE) validity in predicting graduate school success was conducted. Overall, results do not indicate that the verbal and advanced psychology portions are valid predictors of grades, although the quantitative section predicts grades in quantitative…

Merrell, Kenneth W.; Mauk, Gary W. – Diagnostique, 1993
The Battelle Developmental Inventory (BDI) was administered to 121 young children, and parents rated them with the Social Skills Rating System 2-3 years after entry into the study. Correlations between the two measures revealed very weak to modest relationships, providing limited support for the BDI as a predictive measure of future…

Hunter, Maxwell W.; Ballash, Joan B. – Diagnostique, 1990
The Slosson Intelligence Test (SIT) and the Stanford-Binet, Fourth Edition (SBIV) were administered to 95 elementary students referred because of either learning problems or potential giftedness. SIT scores predicted SBIV verbal scores more accurately than composite scores. Overall the SIT predicted SBIV scores better for students with learning…

Phillips, Julia C.; Szymanski, Dawn M.; Ozegovic, Jelena Jovanovic; Briggs-Phillips, Melissa – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 2004
Consistent with C. J. Gelso's (1979, 1993, 1997) research training environment theory, the authors hypothesized that research training environments exist in predoctoral internships. The Internship Research Training Environment Scale (IRTES) was developed to assess research training environments found in predoctoral psychology internships.…

Randomization should be employed whenever possible but the use of carefully controlled nonrandomized data to estimate causal effects is a reasonable and necessary procedure in many cases. (Author/BJG)
