Peer reviewedWeiner, Max; Kippel, Gary – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1984
The California Achievement Test and Degrees of Reading Power tests were administered to students to determine the relationship between the instruments as measures of reading. It was concluded that either test may be used to make valid predictions to the other by use of locally constructed conversion tables. (Author/DWH)

Peer reviewedBurgess, Philip M.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Reevaluated findings for subtle items in the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory D Scale in 214 subjects based on the distinction between item subtlety and face validity. Results indicated that the inclusion of nonpathological items in the D scale did not lead to greater predictive validity of depression criteria. (LLL)

Peer reviewedGriffin, Lawrence R.; Eisenman, Russell – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1972
Results show that the Drake Music Memory Test should be able to discriminate between the poorest and strongest prospects for success in profiting from musical instruction, although it may not be particularly useful in individual counseling. (Authors)

Peer reviewedGrass, Alan L.; Perry, Philippa – Psychometrika, 1983
A procedure for inferring the validity of a selection test as a predictor of some criterion when the available data are limited due to prior selection is described. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Mathematical Models, Predictive Measurement, Predictive Validity, Selection
Peer reviewedGynther, Malcolm D.; And Others – Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1979
Divided the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Pd scale into obvious (O), neutral (N), and subtle (S) subscales. Using college students results were: Pd-O scores were the most powerful predictor of criterion; Pd-S scores made a smaller but unique contribution; and Pd-N scores made no contribution not already in Pd-O criterion…

Peer reviewedPlake, Barbara S.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1981
The concurrent and predictive validity of the Achievement Anxiety Test (AAT) were investigated. The evidence gives cause to be concerned about the quality of a difference score because of the nonindependence of the two scores. Further, the underlying structure of the instrument appears to be more complex than originally hypothesized. (Author/GK)

Peer reviewedRobbins, Steven B.; Schwitzer, Alan M. – Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, 1988
Explored validity of Superiority Scale and Goal Instability Scale in predicting levels of adjustment to academic, personal, social, and institutional demands of college life among matriculating freshman women. Freshman women completed two scales first upon arrival at college (N=178) and again near end of first semester (N=88). Results provided…

Peer reviewedCarver, Ronald P. – Journal of Reading Behavior, 1985
Describes a procedure for rescaling objective measures of comprehension so that they reflect amounts of accuracy of comprehension on an absolute scale. Suggests there is adequate empirical evidence supporting the validity of the rauding rescaling procedure. (RS)

Peer reviewedPinsoneault, Terry B. – Psychological Assessment, 1998
Inconsistent item-pair Variable Response Inconsistency (VRIN) and True Response Inconsistency (TRIN) scales were developed for the Jesness Inventory using 500 male and female delinquents to detect random and acquiescent sets. Specificities above 0.90 showed sensitivities up to 0.89 for VRIN and 0.85 and 0.62 for TRIN. Predictive power and overall…

Peer reviewedCubeta, John F.; Travers, Nan L.; Scheckley, Barry G. – Journal of College Student Retention, 2001
Assessed the predictive validity of the Risk and Promise Profile [copyright], which identifies personal and social influences on academic persistence, with diverse sample of older college students. Hierarchical multiple regression and ANOVA indicated that the profile explains significant portions of the variance associated with academic success,…

Peer reviewedFulcher, Glenn – System, 1996
Examines evidence presented for the validity of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) rating scales in "Foreign Language Annals" (1990), "System" (1992), and "Proficiency Guidelines" (1982, 1986). The article argues that this evidence is insufficient to support a claim for validity. (36…

Rottinghaus, Patrick J.; Coon, Kristin L.; Gaffey, Abigail R.; Zytowski, Donald G. – Journal of Career Assessment, 2007
This study reports a 30-year follow-up of 107 former high school juniors and seniors from a rural Midwestern community who completed the Kuder Occupational Interest Survey (KOIS) in 1975 and 2005. Absolute, intra-individual, and test-retest stability of interests, and predictive validity of occupations were examined. Results showed minor absolute…

Scriven, Michael – Journal of MultiDisciplinary Evaluation, 2007
Noting that there has been extensive discussion of the relation of evaluation to: (1) research; (2) explanations (a.k.a. theory-driven, logic model, or realistic evaluation); and (3) recommendations, the author introduces: (4) prediction. He advocates that unlike the first three concepts, prediction is necessarily part of most kinds of evaluation,…

Linklater, Danielle L.; O'Connor, Rollanda E.; Palardy, Gregory J. – Journal of School Psychology, 2009
The study assessed the ability of English phonemic awareness measures to predict kindergarten reading performance and determine factors that contributed to growth trajectories on those measures for English Only (EO) and English language learner (ELL) students. Using initial sound fluency (ISF), phoneme segmentation fluency (PSF), and a combined…
