Composting is a lesson developed for a sludge treatment and disposal course. The lesson discusses the basic theory of composting and the basic operation, in a step-by-step sequence, of the two typical composting procedures: windrow and forced air static pile. The lesson then covers basic monitoring and operational procedures. The instructor's…

Carnegie, John W. – 1980
Laboratory tests used to determine status and to evaluate and/or maintain process control of the various sludge treatment processes are introduced in this lesson. Neither detailed test procedures nor explanations of how the tests should be applied to every unit are explained; this information is provided in other modules. The instructor's manual…

Alloway, Rawle A. – 1980
This lesson is an introduction to the operation of filter presses. Two basic types of presses, their components, the sequence of operation, operational controls, sampling, and testing are discussed. The instructor's manual contains a description of the lesson, estimated presentation time, instructional materials list, suggested sequence of…

Wooley, John F. – 1982
Capillary suction time is time required for the liquid phase of a treated sludge to travel through 1 centimeter of media (blotter or filter paper). Designed for individuals who have completed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) level 1 laboratory training skills, this module provides waste water treatment plant operators with…

Wooley, John F. – 1982
In the operation of vacuum filters and belt filters, it is desirable to evaluate the performance of different types of filter media and conditioning processes. The filter leaf test, which is used to evaluate these items, is described. Designed for individuals who have completed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) level 1…

Carnegie, John W. – 1982
The rise time test (along with the settleometer procedure) is used to monitor sludge behavior in the secondary clarifier of an activated sludge system. The test monitors the effect of the nitrification/denitrification process and aids the operator in determining optimum clarifier sludge detention time and, to some extent, optimum degree of…

Arasmith, E. E. – 1981
The settleometer test is used to indicate the solids-liquid separation (downtime) capability of sludge, most commonly on activated sludge entering the secondary clarifier and aerobic digesters. Designed for individuals who have completed National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) level 1 laboratory training skills, this module…

Wooley, John F. – 1982
A commonly used test for determining filterability of conditioned sludge is the specific resistance (Buchner funnel) test. The sludge is filtered through filter paper using a Buchner funnel, and the time needed to obtain a given volume of filtrate (or for cake residue to begin to crack) is measured. The shorter the time, the better the…

Veglahn, Peter A.; And Others – Personnel Journal, 1978
The technique of computer simulation applied to collective bargaining situations is presented in the setting of negotiations between library administration and staff (representing, respectively, management and labor union). The negotiation simulation exercise was developed for use in both college and industry. (MF)
