Aim: There is a lack of evidence-based tools for measuring problem-solving in young children with motor delays. Greenwood, Charles R.; Carta, Judith J.; Schnitz, Alana G.; Higgins, Susan; Buzhardt, Jay; Walker, Dale; Jia, Fan; Irvin, Dwight – Journal of Early Intervention, 2021
Measures of young children's social development are needed in the Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) approach to early childhood. In 2004, we reported initial development of an observational measure of infants' and toddlers' social skills designed for early educators, the Early Social Indicator (ESI). Here, we report preliminary findings on the…

Germeroth, Carrie; Bodrova, Elena; Day-Hess, Crystal; Barker, Jane; Sarama, Julie; Clements, Douglas H.; Layzer, Carolyn – American Journal of Play, 2019
The authors consider mature make-believe play a critical component of childhood that helps children develop new skills and learn to communicate. Feeney, Stephanie – Defending the Early Years, 2016
It is difficult to get a good grasp of the topic of kindergarten entry assessment because there are such great differences in the purpose for the instruments, how they are constructed, and how the data is used. Even so, in many states and communities, there is cause for concern. Until the paradigm of education moves from a preoccupation with…

Sexton, David; And Others – Journal of the Division for Early Childhood, 1988
When administered to 34 infants with handicaps, Bayley Scale mental age scores were an average of 2.1 months higher than Estimated Developmental Ages (EDA's) calculated from the Uzgiris and Hunt Scales. The EDA's were significantly and positively related to Bayley mental age, and sensorimotor play emerged as the best single correlate. (Author/JDD)

Emmerich, Walter – 1975
A study of economically disadvantaged children in free play nursery contexts provided further evidence for the cross-cultural applicability of Schaefer's three-dimensional scheme in assessing classroom competencies. Several implications of the configurational approach are a new way of thinking about competence measurement, its differentiated…
