Advances have been made in testing optometrists' clinical skills, particularly with the use of simulation techniques. Further research into these techniques will probably receive the most attention, although a shift in research emphasis from correlational studies of test validity and reliability to test development studies is needed. The increasing emphasis on accountability and continuing competency in the health professions, particularly optometry, is examined. The focus of various competency programs and the role of continuing education as a means of maintaining competency are discussed. (Author/JMD)

A working definition of optometry is given, and four areas for evaluation of clinical competency are outlined: the abilities to develop professional interpersonal relationships with patients and colleagues, determine the specific procedures, and interpret and use clinical data.
