Rudd, David – School Science and Mathematics, 1978
Modern sophisticated computers are shown to multiply the same way the ancient Egyptians did more than 4000 years ago--by doubling and adding. (MN)

Jerman, Max – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1970
Examined were the mental processes by which elementary school students work simple multiplication exercises. Ten process models were fit to data obtained in the course of a CAI program in elementary arithmetic. The processes used by students in grade three were compared with those used by students in grade six. (CT)

McLaughlin, Laura L. – Creative Computing, 1978
A computer program designed to give a student practice in multiplication is discussed. The program features Editing of Input, Answer Positioning, and Timing Routines. (MN)

Hamrin, Jeannie M. – 1978
A computer model of memory (based on input, retrieval, and reaction time) was applied to the rapid processing of simple arithmetic facts (addition, subtraction, and multiplication) by 18 educable retarded adolescents when compared with 18 nonretarded fourth graders (of equal mental age) and 18 normal adolescents. Results for addition indicated…

Jensen, Robert J., Ed. – 1993
Research Ideas for the Classroom is a three-volume series of research interpretations for early childhood, middle grades, and high school mathematics classrooms. Each volume looks at research from the perspective of the learner, the content, and the teacher, and chapters are co-authored by a researcher and a teacher. Chapter titles in the early…

Suydam, Marilyn N., Ed.; Kasten, Margaret L., Ed. – Investigations in Mathematics Education, 1983
An editorial comment on the computer and the mathematics educator is included first. Then, abstracts and comments are presented for 11 articles. Studies included focus on mental addition, problem solving by sixth graders, mathematics anxiety, tutoring, direct instruction, a bilingual program, thinking strategies for multiplication basic facts,…
