A study of internal medicine residents examined patterns of educational indebtedness, effects on their training and career decisions, frequency with which they begin loan payments during training, extent to which they moonlight and the reasons for doing so, and their opinions about the effects of moonlighting on house staff training. Since moonlighting by residents in addition to their demanding residency work schedule might jeopardize patient care, decisions to moonlight are examined. The results indicate that the main motivating factor behind their moonlighting is economic, and residents with higher levels of indebtedness were more likely to moonlight. (Author/MLW)
