Peer reviewedJohnson-Laird, P. N.; And Others – Psychological Review, 1989
A theory of deductive reasoning is presented for inferences that depend on multiply quantified premises. It is argued that reasoners construct mental models based on their knowledge of the meaning of the quantifiers. Three experiments, with 54 university students and adults, corroborated the theory. (SLD)
Descriptors: Abstract Reasoning, Adults, Cognitive Processes, College Students
Peer reviewedKintsch, Walter – Psychological Review, 1988
A discourse comprehension model is developed in which the initial processing is bottom-up. Word meanings are activated, propositions are formed, and inferences and elaborations are produced, regardless of the discourse context. A network of interrelated items is created which can be integrated into a coherent structure. (SLD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Psychology, Communication Research, Discourse Analysis
Peer reviewedMatthews, Dona – Roeper Review, 1988
Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence construct is considered from the perspective of its viability in gifted education, especially in comparison with the more traditional Intelligence Quotient-based construct of intelligence. Empirical and theoretical support and contradictory findings are discussed from the literature in cognitive science and…
Descriptors: Ability Identification, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Secondary Education, Gifted
Williams, Patrick S. – Journal of Children in Contemporary Society, 1988
Reviews theory and research on the use and effectiveness of metaphors, analogies, and models as instructional tools. Concludes that the use of metaphors and other figurative devices promotes the acquisition of new knowledge. Suggests possible design and use of instructional metaphors. (FMW)
Descriptors: Classroom Techniques, Cognitive Processes, Elementary Secondary Education, Figurative Language
Peer reviewedde Ribaupierre, Anik; Bailleux, Christine – International Journal of Behavioral Development, 1994
Attempts the theoretical rapprochement of two theoretical constructs on working memory, neo-Piagetian models and Baddeley's model. Summarizes both types of models, then discusses their similarities and differences. Presents the results of a longitudinal study that supported the idea that these models might be complementary rather than…
Descriptors: Attention Span, Children, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes
Peer reviewedLinard, M. – Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, 1995
Describes the difference between mediation and "mediatisation." Suggests the need for a paradigm shift away from the computational model of knowledge as pure information processing and task-centered problem solving to a more contextualist, sociointeractional, constructivist, user-centered model of cognition. (Author/AEF)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Constructivism (Learning), Educational Development, Information Processing
Peer reviewedMassaro, Dominic W.; Friedman, Daniel – Psychological Review, 1990
Several models of information integration are developed and analyzed in the context of a prototypical pattern-recognition task. Evaluation, integration, and decision-making processes are specified for each. Simulations and predictions are carried out to provide a measure of identifiability or extent to which they can be distinguished from one…
Descriptors: Bayesian Statistics, Cognitive Processes, Criteria, Decision Making
Sternberg, Robert J. – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1992
This commentary on a paper by Douglas Detterman and others (EC 604 995), which tested a model assessing basic cognitive abilities in young adults with and without mental retardation, criticizes the paper for drawing conclusions not justified by the empirical results. (JDD)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Tests, Intelligence, Intelligence Tests
Peer reviewedNecka, Edward; And Others – Learning and Instruction, 1992
The effects of incidental learning were assessed in 2 experiments involving 201 seventh graders in Poland through an experimental paradigm based on the levels of processing theory. Data suggest that an important aspect of intelligence is "opportunistic" learning (learning in advance). Intelligent people take cognitive advantage of…

Peer reviewedGeary, David C.; Widaman, Keith F. – Intelligence, 1992
The relationship between elementary operations underlying processing of numerical information and performance on psychometrically derived ability measures requiring processing of numbers but defining separate ability factors was studied for 102 Air Force recruits (54 males and 48 females). Patterns of convergent and discriminate relationships for…
Descriptors: Ability, Addition, Cognitive Processes, Computation
Peer reviewedPirie, Susan; Kieren, Thomas – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1994
Proposes a model for the growth of mathematical understanding based on the consideration of understanding as a whole, dynamic, leveled but nonlinear process. Illustrates the model using the concept of fractions. How to map the growth of understanding is explained in detail. (Contains 26 references.) (MKR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Structures, Elementary Secondary Education, Fractions
Peer reviewedLoritz, Donald – Applied Linguistics, 1991
Presents the Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) model as a general framework for explaining common linguistic phenomena such as fossilization, categorical perception, vowel phonemicization, and linguistic rule formation. ART models are compared with cerebellar modes. (49 references) (GLR)
Descriptors: Brain Hemisphere Functions, Cognitive Processes, Comparative Analysis, Language Acquisition
An Instructional Model for Integrating Content-Area Instruction with Cognitive Strategy Instruction.
Peer reviewedEllis, Edwin S. – Reading and Writing Quarterly: Overcoming Learning Difficulties, 1994
Considers the limitations of treating learning strategy instruction and content-area subject instruction separately from each other. Discusses the challenges facing a closer integration of these two components. Describes a working model for integrating these two forms of instruction. (HB)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Content Area Reading, English Instruction, Epistemology
Peer reviewedEllsworth, J'Anne D. – Journal of At-Risk Issues, 1996
Presents a seven-step model that describes a cognitive and behavioral loop that may explain actions of some impulsive and out-of-control youngsters. Suggests some intervention strategies that take the cognitive loop into account and help the student work toward personal control. (SLD)
Descriptors: Behavior Patterns, Cognitive Processes, Discipline, Elementary Secondary Education
Peer reviewedBorges, A. Tarciso; Gilbert, John K. – International Journal of Science Education, 1999
Reports on four models that show a possible pattern of progression that may be related to individual acquisition of conceptual knowledge about electricity. Contains 45 references. (DDR)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation, Electricity, Foreign Countries
