Blood, Chris – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1992
Presents two methods for solving equations. An asymmetric approach works backward from a number by reversing operations performed on a variable. A symmetric approach views the equation as a scale and performs inverse operations on both sides of the balance to solve for the variable. (MDH)

Barnes, George – Physics Teacher, 1992
Discusses the rate of fall of a wooden beam or a chimney by examining the fall of a highway lamp pole when it is sheered off at its base upon impact by a vehicle. Provides the mathematical formulas to explain and an experiment to illustrate the phenomenon. (MDH)

Crane, Beverley; Markowitz, Nancy Lourie – Reference Librarian, 1994
Presents a model that uses online searching to teach critical thinking skills in elementary and secondary education based on Bloom's taxonomy. Three levels of activity are described: analyzing a search statement; defining and clarifying a problem; and focusing an information need. (Contains 13 references.) (LRW)

Solomon, Frederick – Mathematics Magazine, 1990
Explored are the distributions of residual components in two model systems. A system of components with exponentially distributed lifetimes and the two-dimensional "leaf model" in which objects fall on a plane with positions independent and normally distributed are discussed. Included are the definition, application, computations, and theorem. (KR)

Johnson, William B.; Norton, Jeffrey E. – Educational Technology, Research and Development, 1992
Review of research and development on the design of computer-based simulation for diagnostic training highlights the development and evaluation of eight diagnostic training systems that explored the appropriate level of student modeling needed for technology training. Topics addressed include changes in interface design, displays, and system…

Bar, Varda; Travis, Anthony S. – Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 1991
This article reports on answers by children (grades 1-9, n=83) to oral and written questions concerning the phase change from liquid to gas. The development of concepts was followed, proceeding from concrete to abstract ideas. Many students were found to experience difficulties in problem solving even though they may have had the necessary level…

Howze, Y. S. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1993
The Quality Circle Model of Planning is presented as a program evaluation approach for schools serving students with blindness. The model helps administrators solve problems using creative, innovative approaches; identifies human and monetary resources for successful implementation of the plan; and provides a framework for evaluating the plan's…

Howe, Kenneth R.; Miramontes, Ofelia B. – Journal of Special Education, 1991
The case of a school district refusing to supply an interpreter for an above-average student with a hearing impairment is used as a point of departure for this discussion of a framework for ethical deliberation and the special role-related obligations that help define the ethics of special education. Lowther, Deborah L.; Morrison, Gary R. – TechTrends, 1998
The "iNtegrating Technology for inQuiry" (NTeQ) model provides a framework for creating an environment for students to use computers as tools to build a strong educational background while solving meaningful problems. This article outlines the NTeQ philosophy, describes the design process for lesson plans, and discusses professional development…
