Schroeder, Roger G. – Operations Research, 1974
Presents and illustrates a goal-programming model for long-range budget planning and resource allocation. Goals are faculty instruction loads, staff-to-faculty ratios, faculty distribution by rank, and teaching-assistant-to-faculty ratios. Decision variables are the faculty, staff, and teaching-assistant levels in each of several academic units.…

Brewer, Garry D. – Simulation and Games, 1978
Discusses basic weaknesses and limitations of models, simulations, gaming, and other analytical and behavioral approaches to simplifying reality for understanding. The development and use of scenarios and the model builder's basic conceptions of the aspects of reality being analyzed are described for a one-person, computer-interactive, quasi-rigid…

Greenfield, Lois Broder – New Directions for Teaching and Learning, 1987
Attempts to determine the skills that make people good problem solvers and some of the methods that have been developed to teach these skills are reviewed. Methods used by educators and psychologists to define, describe, or analyze problems and problem solving determine the method used to teach problem-solving skills. (Author/MLW)

Wigton, Robert S.; And Others – Journal of Medical Education, 1986
There is evidence that students who are given information about how they appear to weigh information in reaching a judgment can learn to make judgments more accurately. A microcomputer system was used to generate simulated cases and then calculate the relationship between the data presented and the student's diagnosis. (Author/MLW)

McKenna, Michael C. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1986
The purpose of this study was to test a specific hypothesis with regard to how cloze retrieval takes place once semantic constraints are recognized. Results from human subjects and computer simulation suggested that increase in latency between the two- and three-semantic-constraint conditions was not artifactual. (JAZ)

Miller, Andy – Simulation/Games for Learning, 1985
Outlines role and sources of simulations and discusses use of adults other than teachers (AOTs) in the classroom in Great Britain's School Curriculum Industry Project. Arguments for using AOTs, a model that delineates role of AOTs in simulation use, and case studies illustrating project practices in this area are presented. (Author/MBR)

Peterson, Nils S.; Campbell, Kenneth B. – Physiologist, 1985
Describes a computer-based instructional unit in cardiovascular physiology. The program (which employs simulated laboratory experimental techniques with a problem-solving format is designed to supplement an animal laboratory and to offer students an integrative approach to physiology through use of microcomputers. Also presents an overview of the…

Just, Marcel Adam; Carpenter, Patricia A. – Psychological Review, 1985
Strategic differences in spatial tasks are explained in terms of different cognitive coordinate systems that subjects adopt such as standard versus arbitrary, task-defined axes. A theoretical account of mental rotation of individuals of low and high spatial ability solving problems from psychometric tests is instantiated as computer simulation…

Atnip, Gilbert W. – Teaching of Psychology, 1985
Described is a college course on the use of computers in psychology that included an introduction to computers, computing, word processing, data analysis, data acquisition, artificial intelligence, computer assisted instruction, simulation, and modeling. Students conducted independent research projects using the computer. (Author/RM)

Wagner, Jon – Journal of Experiential Education, 1983
Outlines three different models of formal experiential education: instruction group process, simulation and games, and field experience. Describes the development of the Field Studies Program at the University of California at Berkeley and examines the process by which all three traditions were effectively integrated into the program. (SB)

Klopfer, Eric; Colella, Vanessa – 2000
This paper focuses on one method used to introduce model design and creation using StarLogo to a group of high school teachers. Teachers with model-building skills can easily customize modeling environments for their classes. More importantly, model building can enable teachers to approach their curricula from a more holistic perspective, as well…

Anzai, Yuichiro; Simon, Herbert A. – Psychological Review, 1979
A theory is proposed of the processes which enable a subject to learn while solving a problem. One subject's protocol--including 224 steps and taking 90 minutes--is described. Adequacy of the mechanisms is guaranteed by a computer simulation of the processes in an adaptive production system. (Author/GDC)

Van Joolingen, Wouter R.; De Jong, Ton – Instructional Science, 1997
This article describes and tests a theory of scientific discovery learning based on the Scientific Discovery as Dual Search (SDDS) model. A study of 22 university chemistry students determined that conditions for performing a search operation in hypothesis space include sufficient knowledge of the search operation and reasons for choosing a…
