Many mastery decisions are made based on assessment devices that are known to be less than perfectly reliable. A significant portion of examinees who have scores near the cutting score risk misclassification, even for instruments with relatively high retest reliability. Suggestions for minimizing this risk are offered. (Author/MT)

This study investigated the relationships among scholastic aptitude, achievement, and performance on a state-mandated teacher competency test for secondary school teachers. The impact of school district resources and policy changes on basic skills performance is examined in this article. Data were collected to observe if specific policy changes, testing programs, or teacher training influence student test results. Student pretesting had the only significant positive effect on performance. (Author/DF)

Learning disabled fifth graders in Florida were given modified versions of the Florida State Student Assessment Test. Modifications such as additional examples, smaller subsections, unjustified formats, and grouping of items in order of difficulty facilitated the students' performance.
