Bruning, Roger H.; And Others – 1977
In two experiments, visual and auditory memory were tested for good and for poor readers from the upper elementary grades. Under experimenter-blind conditions, no reading group differences existed for single-mode presentation in recognition frequency or recognition latency. With a multimodal presentation, latencies for poor readers were similar to…

Peer reviewedVernon, Magdalen D. – Harvard Educational Review, 1977
Synthesizing a diverse group of studies, author argues that reading disability is not a unitary phenomenon but can result from deficiencies in different psychological processes. Based on the points at which an individual's reading breaks down, she presents a fourfold classifications scheme capable of categorizing all poor readers. (Editor/RK)

Smith, Carl B.; And Others – 1969
Focus is on the duties of an administrator in establishing a reading clinic. Learning difficulties and characteristics of severly disabled readers are listed. Current approaches such as the university clinic, public school clinics, and mobile clinics are shown, and working examples of each are cited. Considerations of use, financing, and…

Twelve reading-disabled and 12 nondisabled boys, of average intellectual ability, in Grades 3 to 6 were compared on the Memory-For-Designs, Bender-Gestalt, Trail Making Test, and the 11 subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised (WISC-R). (Author)

Peer reviewedSwanson, Lee – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1978
No difference was found in recall of nonverbal stimuli between normal and learning disabled readers, suggesting that primary reading deficits in learning disabled children are related to verbal encoding deficiencies (visual-verbal integration) and not to deficiencies of visual memory, as suggested by the perceptual deficit hypothesis. (Author/GDC)

Peer reviewedVernon, M. D. – British Journal of Psychology, 1979
It is suggested that reading is not a unitary process, but the acquisition of a succession of skills. Different retarded readers may break down at different stages in the acquisition of these. Each disability type may be associated with a particular type of deficiency in conceptual thinking. (Author/SJL)

Wicklund,David A.; Katz, Leonard – 1977
Differences in perceptual processes of good and poor readers relevant to single word perception have been studied in a series of experiments. The major differences between good and poor readers have been shown to occur at the level of the single word; other differences occur in knowledge of spelling patterns and ability to make use of letters'…

Restaino, Lillian C. R. – 1968
To investigate the underlying factors of visual discrimination, memory, rule abstraction, language, and serial ordering in reading success, 79 poor and 65 good deaf readers were administered a battery of tests. Poor readers were deficient in lower-order visual discrimination and memory abilities; higher-order visual discrimination skills were…

Klein, Pnina S.; Schwartz, Allen A. – 1977
To determine if auditory sequential memory (ASM) in young children can be improved through training and to discover the effects of such training on the reading scores of children with reading problems, a study was conducted involving 92 second and third graders. For purposes of this study, auditory sequential memory was defined as the ability to…
