A Kaupapa Maori Critique of Digital Resources for Pangarau
Melina Marama Amos; Lisa Darragh; Tony Trinick
set: Research Information for Teachers, n3 p2-9 2024
There is a significant lack of te reo Maori resources, especially digital materials, for learning pangarau/mathematics. Few studies have investigated how well digital resources for pangarau align with kaupapa Maori principles. In this article, we examine a digital resource, Matific, from a kaupapa Maori perspective. We find the te reo version of Matific aids in the revitalisation of te reo Maori by expanding some pangarau vocabulary. However, some aspects of Matific adopt a Western, mainstream approach to mathematics that does not align with kaupapa Maori values, such as kaitiakitanga. We argue that schools and kura should carefully consider how resources such as Matific may best serve their needs.
