Roxana Jimenez – ProQuest LLC, 2023
This qualitative case study pursued to describe the different strategies Mexican American adult students in a local community college used to graph function transformations. Participants in the study were purposefully selected using a criterion sampling to ensure participants were atypical, above average students between the ages 18-22, and had a…

Aquilonius, Birgit C.; Brenner, Mary E. – Statistics Education Research Journal, 2015
Results from a study of 16 community college students are presented. The research question concerned how students reasoned about p-values. Students' approach to p-values in hypothesis testing was procedural. Students viewed p-values as something that one compares to alpha values in order to arrive at an answer and did not attach much meaning to…

Stringer, Eddy W., III. – ProQuest LLC, 2011
Data suggests that a significant loss of African American students from STEM majors occur between their freshmen and sophomore year. This attrition corresponds to the time period when students encounter the calculus sequence. For this reason, calculus persists as a serious barrier preventing African American students from entering STEM fields.…

Gordon, Sheldon P. – MathAMATYC Educator, 2009
Each year, well over a million students take college algebra and related courses. Very few of these students take the courses to prepare for calculus, but rather because they are required by other disciplines or to fulfill Gen Ed requirements. The present article discusses what the current mathematical needs are in most of those disciplines,…

Berry, Andrew J. – AMATYC Review, 2004
When discussing the topic of elementary complex variables, students are often mystified by the fact that ii is real. After seeing a proof of this statement, a standard question is "well, what about iii or iiii etc., are these real or complex?" In this paper the meaning of the infinite power-tower iii...is considered both from the "bottom-up" and…

McDonald, Todd – AMATYC Review, 2006
This paper presents a visual representation of complex solutions of quadratic equations in the xy plane. Rather than moving to the complex plane, students are able to experience a geometric interpretation of the solutions in the xy plane. I am also working on these types of representations with higher order polynomials with some success.

Bosse, Michael J. – AMATYC Review, 2006
Within statistics instruction, students are often requested to sketch the curve representing a normal distribution with a given mean and standard deviation. Unfortunately, these sketches are often notoriously imprecise. Poor sketches are usually the result of missing mathematical knowledge. This paper considers relationships which exist among…
