Alves, Francisco Régis Vieira; Pinheiro, Carla Patrícia Souza Rodrigues; De Sousa, Renata Teófilo; Catarino, Paula Maria Machado Cruz – Acta Didactica Napocensia, 2023
This article is an excerpt from a master's thesis developed in Brazil, in which we approach recurrent and linear sequences, given some intriguing particularities in their definitions and the scarcity of discussion of this topic in the literature of the History of Mathematics, especially with regard to its geometric representation. Thus, we aim to…

Mensah, Justice Yawson; Nabie, Michael Johnson – International Journal of Technology in Education, 2021
This study explored the effect of PowerPoint integration on students' motivation and achievement in less endowed Senior High Schools (SHSs). The study employed the embedded mixed method approach involving quasi-experimental design in which 80 students were randomly selected from two government-assisted Senior High Schools and assigned to control…

Richard, Philippe R.; Oller Marcén, Antonio Miguel; Meavilla Seguí, Vicente – ZDM: The International Journal on Mathematics Education, 2016
Our article aims to show how illuminating mathematical work as a concept from didactics of mathematics is useful in understanding issues relating to proving and learning of proof, with or without technology. After posing our hypotheses on the relationship of proof with mathematical work, the pedagogical intent of historical elements of geometry…

Zengin, Yilmaz – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2018
The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service teachers' views about the history of mathematics course in which GeoGebra was used. The qualitative research design was used in this study. The participants of the study consisted of 23 pre-service mathematics teachers studying at a state university in Turkey. An open-ended questionnaire was…

Bozkurt, Ali – International Journal of Research in Education and Science, 2018
This study examined pre-service teachers' accuracy for geometric constructions with dynamic geometry software, their justification for the accuracy of geometric figures, and their awareness they gained throughout the process. The data come from a sample of 71 elementary grade pre-service teachers activity form completed as a part of geometry…

Breda, Ana Maria D'azevedo; Dos Santos, José Manuel Dos Santos – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 2016
Complex functions, generally feature some interesting peculiarities, seen as extensions of real functions. The visualization of complex functions properties usually requires the simultaneous visualization of two-dimensional spaces. The multiple Windows of GeoGebra, combined with its ability of algebraic computation with complex numbers, allow the…

Caglayan, Gunhan – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2016
The purpose of this article is to offer teaching ideas in the treatment of the definite integral concept and the Riemann sums in a technology-supported environment. Specifically, the article offers teaching ideas and activities for classroom for the numerical methods of approximating a definite integral via left- and right-hand Riemann sums, along…

de Moura Fonseca, Daila Silva Seabra; de Oliveira Lino Franchi, Regina Helena – Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications, 2016
This study addresses the embodied approach of convergence of numerical sequences using the GeoGebra software. We discuss activities that were applied in regular calculus classes, as a part of a research which used a qualitative methodology and aimed to identify contributions of the development of activities based on the embodiment of concepts,…

Hidiroglu, Çaglar Naci; Güzel, Esra Bukova – International Journal for Technology in Mathematics Education, 2017
The aim of the study is to conceptualize the technology-aided mathematical modelling process in the frame of cognitive modelling perspective. The grounded theory approach was adopted in the study. The research was conducted with seven groups consisting of nineteen prospective mathematics teachers. The data were collected from the video records of…

Nirode, Wayne – Mathematics Teacher, 2016
A part of high school geometry is devoted to the study of parallelograms in the context of proving some of their properties using congruent triangles (CCSSI 2010). The typical high school geometry book's chapter on quadrilaterals focuses on parallelograms (e.g., their properties, proving that a given quadrilateral is a parallelogram, and special…

Prasad, Priya V. – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2016
How can we, as teachers, encourage students to move from drawing geometric objects to constructing them and thereby build their mathematical reasoning skills? One way to encourage students to construct instead of draw shapes and to help students develop more robust understandings of geometric relationships and constructions is to use interactive…

Cochran, Jill A.; Cochran, Zane; Laney, Kendra; Dean, Mandi – Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, 2016
With the rise of personal desktop 3D printing, a wide spectrum of educational opportunities has become available for educators to leverage this technology in their classrooms. Until recently, the ability to create physical 3D models was well beyond the scope, skill, and budget of many schools. However, since desktop 3D printers have become readily…

Hohenwarter, Markus – New England Mathematics Journal, 2011
This article discusses two examples of geometric problem solving suitable for middle and high school students. Both problems are related to students' everyday life experience and allow them to discover deep connections between mathematical properties and nature. With the help of dynamic mathematics software, students have the opportunity to…

Contreras, José – Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, 2014
In this paper I describe how I have used the classic buried treasure problem with prospective and practicing mathematics teachers to enhance their problem solving abilities and disposition to integrate interactive geometry software (IGS) into the learning environment. I illustrate how IGS may be used as a strategic tool to gain insight into the…

Al-Darwish, Nasir – Acta Didactica Napocensia, 2012
We describe a procedure that utilizes symmetric curves for building artistic tiles. One particular curve was found to mesh nicely with hundreds other curves, resulting in eye-catching tiling designs. The results of our work serve as a good example of using ideas from 2-D graphics and algorithms in a practical web-based application.
