Snelsire, Robert W. – 1969
The problem of designing computer programs that will approach human capabilities in pattern recognition is discussed. Human beings are much better at recognizing patterns that are highly structured than at recognizing patterns that are not. In contrast, a computer system's performance in pattern recognition is almost independent of the amount of…

Jefferson, T. R.; And Others – Psychometrika, 1989
The problem of scaling ordinal categorical data observed over two or more sets of categories measuring a single characteristic is addressed. Scaling is obtained by solving a constrained entropy model. A Kullback-Leibler statistic is generated that operationalizes a measure for the strength of consistency among the sets of categories. (TJH)

Brieske, Gerald F. – 1969
The study is concerned with the problem of determining stimulus discrimination thresholds in non-human vertebrates. In constrast to conventional methods of teaching differentiation of various stimuli by fixed reinforcement schedules, stimulus discrimination threshold determination is related to a teaching system that adjusts to continuously…

Musa, F. A. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1986
The production of high quality Arabic-English text poses technical problems that are caused mainly by the high degree of syntactical flexibility which characterizes the Arabic language. This article describes a system which offers some solutions to the problems encountered in processing bilingual Arabic-English text. (Author/EM)

Karian, Z.A. – 1977
Depending on their programming knowledge, students can become involved with the use of the computer in the construction and analysis of mathematical models, either through observing and/or interacting with a model developed by a programmer, or by becoming involved in the process of constructions and testing of models. The Bush-Mosteller Simple…

Lord, Robert E.; And Others – 1981
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the parallel processing impact of multiple-instruction multiple-data path (MIMD) computers on flight simulation software. Basic mathematical functions and arithmetic expressions from typical flight simulation software were selected and run on an MIMD computer to evaluate the improvement in execution time…

Hubert, Lawrence J.; Baker, Frank B. – Psychometrika, 1978
The "Traveling Salesman" and similar combinatorial programming tasks encountered in operations research are discussed as possible data analysis models in psychology, for example, in developmental scaling, Guttman scaling, profile smoothing, and data array clustering. A short overview of various computational approaches from this area of…

Joachimsthaler, Erich A.; Stam, Antonie – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1990
Mathematical programing formulas are introduced as new approaches to solve the classification problem in discriminant analysis. The research literature is reviewed, and an illustration using a real-world classification problem is provided. Issues relevant to potential uses of these formulations are discussed. (TJH)

Connelly, E. M.; And Others – 1969
A new approach to deriving human performance measures and criteria for use in automatically evaluating trainee performance is described. Ultimately, this approach will allow automatic measurement of pilot performance in a flight simulator or from recorded in-flight data. An efficient method of representing performance data within a computer is…

BOYER, ROSCOE A. – 1961
A PROGRAM THAT WOULD DEVISE OPTIMAL ROUTES FOR SCHOOL BUSES WAS DEVELOPED. ONE OF THE TWO MODELS DEVELOPED FOR THIS STUDY, CALLED THE HEURISTIC MODEL, WAS A HAND PROCEDURE BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT, IN AN EFFICIENT SCHOOL BUS SYSTEM, STUDENT MILES SHOULD BE MINIMIZED RATHER THAN BUS MILES. THE OTHER MODEL WAS DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH HIGH SPEED…
