Fowler, Robert L. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1987
This paper develops a general method for comparing treatment magnitudes for research employing multiple treatment fixed effects analysis of variance designs, which may be used for main effects with any number of levels without regard to directionality. (Author/BS)

Robertson, S. E. – Journal of Documentation, 1986
A Bayesian argument is used to suggest modifications to the Robertson and Jones relevance weighting formula to accommodate the addition to the query of terms taken from the relevant documents identified during the search. (Author)

Fields, Lawrence D.; Hawkes, Stephen J. – Journal of College Science Teaching, 1986
Addresses the principles and problems associated with the use of significant figures. Explains uncertainty, the meaning of significant figures, the Simple Rule, the Three Rule, and the 1-5 Rule. Also provides examples of the Rules. (ML)

Jarvelin, Kalervo – Journal of Documentation, 1986
Describes a method for advance estimation of user charges for queries in relational data model-based numeric databases when charges are based on data retrieved. Use of this approach is demonstrated by sample queries to an imaginary marketing database. The principles and methods of this approach and its relevance are discussed. (MBR)

Burrell, Quentin L. – Journal of Documentation, 1986
Correlation structure of the Burrell and Cane mixed Poisson model for library loans with aging is presented and illustrated by data from University of Sussex. The approach is compared and contrasted with that originally formulated by Morse and recently reevaluated by Beheshti and Tague. Directions for future investigations are suggested. (Author)

Sadowski, Barbara – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Describes three studies in which students (N=515; N=60; N=135) were asked to indicate appropriate operations and numbers used in solving open mathematical sentences. Analysis of data and interviews suggest two error patterns: "finding a solution" and "inverse operation." Indicates that "finding a solution" strategy…

Krause, Eugene F. – School Science and Mathematics, 1974
The derivation of a method to drive the general term of a sequence is presented. The difference sequences and binomial coefficents are used in the derivation. An application of this method is made to solve Polya's problems concerned with dividing space in regions by a given number of planes. (JP)

Cardinet, Jean; Allal, Linda – New Directions for Testing and Measurement, 1983
A general framework for conducting generalizability analyses is presented. Generalizability theory is extended to situations in which the objects of measurement are not persons but other factors, such as instructional objectives, stages of learning, and treatments. (Author/PN)

Chapman, David W.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1983
This study investigated the validity of Hayes's formula for converting rank-ordered Rokeach Values data to a normal distribution theoretically achieved through the use of rated data. Findings support the validity of Hayes's formula and expand the analytic possibilities of data collected on the Rokeach instrument. (Author/PN)

Bastable, C. W.; Fogg, Stephen L. – Academe, 1982
The benefits of the new Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association graded-benefit method and traditional level-benefit program are compared. Several possible typical situations are analyzed for both plans, showing net yearly incomes projected through retirement and considering tax rates. (MSE)
