Estimates of sample size requirements for 2 X 2 tables, derived from three approximate formulae, were evaluated by comparison with exact calculations. Although different, the estimates derived from all three formulae were judged adequate for most practical purposes, with the most accurate results being obtained from Cohen's formula. (Author/JKS)

Formulas are derived for computing the chi-square statistic from proportions or percentages, both for tests of goodness of fit and association. Advantages of the new formulas are given, as are some examples. (Author/MH)
