Suggests that modern child welfare services require frequent collaboration among different disciplines. Individuals in the field may benefit from a graduate program that presents an integrated approach and leads to a Master of Arts degree in child welfare. A survey of the 76 graduates of Kent State's applied sociology masters program, designed to prepare students for employment outside academe, found one graduate employed outside her field, four who continued their education and became practicing sociologists, and a majority who used their training as human service practitioners. In a study of master's degree programs in industrial technology, it was concluded that, in general, the programs are not research oriented and demonstration of research competency, beyond satisfactorily completing a research methods course, is not a major requirement. A job placement course designed for first-semester students was introduced in a rehabilitation counseling master's program. An agency-based field experience was combined with classwork.
