A Qualitative Case Study of School Board Members' Knowledge of School Mental Health Issues

The study is a qualitative case study of school board members (SBMs )knowledge of school Mental Health (MH) issues including two points. First, it is unknown to what extent School Board Members are knowledgeable about contemporary MH issues. Second, it is unknown if SBM knowledge of School District Mental Health (SDMH) policy is representative of the majority or minority view of the School Board that may contribute to any change impact. The study purpose is to document the extent of seventeen SBM's knowledge about MH issues and if the SBM is in the minority or majority vote on the School Board. The guiding theoretical framework was based on social constructivism. A qualitative case study design was used to interview seventeen SBMs by phone through an interview protocol based on three research questions. The questions asked (a) how knowledgeable are SBMs regarding contemporary MH issues, treatments and outcomes in their respective districts? (b) To what extent do the SBMs minority or majority board status on priority/critical MH issues and their personal ability to influence, affect or initiate change impact ton district policy? (c) What strategies or sources are sought and available to SBM's for MH information? All findings and conclusions indicated that thirteen out of seventeen SBMs on average had insufficient knowledge of SDMH issues in their respective districts while seldom voting against the majority faction and rarely ever consulting online sources to make informed decisions. The implications of this study are that many of the SBM are not well informed on MH issues and are making decisions, therefore increased knowledge of MH issues should be provided to SBMs before they vote on MH issues.
