How to effectively teach students one of the most important skills they can learn during their college years--how to use a library (any library) to investigate a subject independently--is the concern of this article. (Author/NH)

What should be taught in a library instruction program for general biology students is presented and two ways of providing the instruction are discussed. The two methods, lecture-demonstration and guided exercise are described, and evaluated for their effectiveness. (7 references) (Author)
