Discusses the superiority of vertical filing of maps in compressor-style vertical units over horizontal filing in drawers, emphasizing such factors as physical protection of the collection, ease of filing and retrieval, and efficient use of space. 250,000 volumes were converted from Dewey to LC by the on-line Administrative Terminal System (ATS) within seven months at Western Kentucky University Library. In turn, new catalog cards, Hollerith book cards, pockets, labels, bibliographies, and catalogs were produced by the automated ATS system. (6 references) (Author/DH)
