Peer reviewedNelde, P. H. – Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, 1981
Examines language frontier and transitional zones along the Belgium-northwestern France linguistic border as area occupying important position in linguistic contact research. Gives examples of variant forms in the morphosyntactic, semantic, stylistic, and lexical forms. (Author/BK)
Descriptors: Language Research, Language Universals, Linguistic Borrowing, Morphology (Languages)
Peer reviewedCulhane, P. T. – Russian Language Journal, 1977
Recent experiments in machine translation have given the semantic elements of collocation in Russian more objective criteria. Soviet linguists in search of semantic relationships have attempted to devise a semantic synthesis for construction of a basic language for machine translation. One such effort is summarized. (CHK)
Descriptors: Grammar, Language Research, Linguistic Theory, Machine Translation
Peer reviewedFranckel, Jean-Jacques – Journal of French Language Studies, 1997
Analysis of the French verb prefix "re-" finds its occurrence characterized not, strictly speaking, by meaning but by the variety of ways in which the verb itself and its prefixed form interact. Occurrences of "re-" are classified into five categories. Verbs not compatible with the prefix and several unusual cases are also discussed. (MSE)

Peer reviewedSpinelli, Elsa; Alario, F.-Xavier – Language and Cognitive Processes, 2002
Examined whether context marked for grammatical gender can constrain the processing of homphone words in French. Homophones whose different meaning are associated with words of different genders were used in two cross-modal semantic priming experiments. (Author/VWL)
Descriptors: Context Effect, Grammar, Language Processing, Language Research
Peer reviewedRichardson, Ian M. – System, 1990
A possible syllabus for English for Science and Technology is suggested based upon a set of causal relations, arising from a logical description of the presuppositional rhetoric of scientific passages that underlie most semantic functions. An empirical study is reported of the semantic functions present in 52 randomly selected passages.…
Descriptors: Course Descriptions, English for Science and Technology, Language Research, Rhetoric
Peer reviewedBloom, Paul – Journal of Child Language, 1990
Presents a study of young children's understanding that pronouns and proper names cannot be modified by pronominal adjectives. Some nonsyntactic theories are discussed that support the claim that children understand knowledge of word order through the rules that order abstract linguistic categories. (31 references) (GLR)
Descriptors: Adjectives, Child Language, Language Research, Nouns
Peer reviewedPalacas, Arthur L. – Discourse Processes, 1993
Presents an interpretive theory assigning all text to "Linguistic Worlds" (LWs). Shows how a special deictic LW (needed for default attribution to the speaker and useful for describing parentheticals, evaluative adjectives, and epitheticals) gives the capacity to characterize shifts in point of view accompanying the indirect first-person speech of…

Peer reviewedHasegawa, Yoko – Language and Communication, 1993
Using framework of prototype semantics, TE-constructions (type of verbal construct in Japanese), are categorized according to underlying metaphors and related to central TE-construction in which K- 1K- indicate both motion and direction in physical space. Through descriptions, discussions, and examples, it is demonstrated that no adequate…
Descriptors: Deep Structure, Japanese, Language Research, Semantics
Peer reviewedHodgson, James M. – Language and Cognitive Processes, 1991
Provides evidence that automatic lexical priming is a product of an informationally specific lexical level network. An alternative account appealing to retrospective but automatic semantic integration processes is discussed.(52 references) (JL)
Descriptors: College Students, Language Processing, Language Research, Lexicology
Peer reviewedFairclough, Norman – Linguistics and Education, 1992
Operationalizes the concept of intertextuality by using it to analyze sample texts. Certain dimensions of intertextuality are described that have potential for building a framework for discourse analysis: interdiscursivity, textual transformations, and how texts constitute social identities. (Contains 35 references.) (JP)

Peer reviewedPerfetti, Charles A.; Tan, Li-Hai – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1998
Considers specific aspects of phonological and orthographic processing in Chinese that may differ from those in English. Emphasizes that early phonological processes and phonological mediation are two different questions in the identification-with-phonology hypothesis. Shows that "mediation" and "prelexical phonology," two very…

Peer reviewedWeekes, B. S.; Chen, M. J.; Lin, Y-B. – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1998
Finds phonological priming effects on compound targets (characters containing separate radical components); no evidence of phonological priming on integrated targets (those not containing separate radicals); semantic priming effects on both compound and integrated target recognition, suggesting that phonological and semantic activation are…

Peer reviewedTamaoka, Katsuo; Hatsuzuka, Makiko – Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, 1998
Finds that, because kanji morphemes of opposite and similar concepts are semantically activated both as morpheme units and compound-word units, semantic representations of the two morphemes and the compound word which they create compete with each other at the concept level, which slows down lexical decision and naming of the compound word.
