Tarte, Robert D.; Barritt, Loren S. – 1968
A forced-choice paired-comparison test containing 252 items was presented to eight subjects. Each item consisted of two geometric figures chosen systematically from a sample of four ellipses and four triangles. The subjects (six female and two male adults who spoke only English) were asked to decide which of the two figures went best with a…

Peer reviewedLewis, J.; And Others – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
Sentences were read by six informants to determine the presence or absence of /n/ in /nth/ sequences. The sentences contained seven different levels of juncture with /nth/ occurring in word final position, intervocalically, and across word boundaries, among other places. Dental coarticulation was not hindered by most junctures. (SC)

Peer reviewedSmith, Bruce L. – Journal of Child Language, 1979
Reports on an experiment which sought to compare child and adult speech in terms of (1) stop productions evidencing devoicing during consonant closure, and (2) consonant closure evidencing voicing in the case of devoiced stops. (Author/AM)

Peer reviewedCondax, I. D.; And Others – Journal of Phonetics, 1976
This article describes a technique used to monitor the action of the upper front surface of the soft palate during normal speech in French. Results tend to confirm the findings of other instrumental phonetic research, and contradict some theoretical claims of French phonology. (CLK)

Peer reviewedMiller, Joanne L.; Eimas, Peter D. – Journal of Phonetics, 1976
The selective tuning of feature detectors sensitive to the acoustic information relevant to the assignment of distinctive phonetic feature values was investigated with a contingent adaptation paradigm. (Author/RM)

Trask, R. L. – 1996
The dictionary, intended primarily for teachers and students of phonetics, contains almost 2,000 terms used in the field of phonetics. Areas covered include articulatory, acoustic, and perceptual phonetics, classical and generative phonology, distinctive features, the phonology of English, and phonological change and variation. Terminology is…

Peer reviewedRiordan, Carol J. – Journal of Phonetics, 1976
This experiment investigated the language specificity of phonetic processes. Results suggest the need for adding another language-specific level of processing to the contemporary phonology-phonetic theory. Such a phonetic competence component would define the level at which semantic intention is integrated with the functional properties of the…

Peer reviewedGandour, Jack; And Others – Language and Speech, 1980
Data on the durations of vowels preceding voiced and voiceless stops in three normal speakers and three esophageal speakers (who had had laryngectomies) suggested that the vowel length variations that were observed were language-specific, governed by phonological rules of English, and were not language universals. (Author/RL)

Peer reviewedColeman, R. F.; Hollien, H. – Journal of Phonetics, 1975
Underwater intelligibility of three standard word lists is evaluated in two experiments. Results indicate that words which are equated for difficulty in normal conditions are likewise equated under water. Phoneme distortion was examined in a multiple choice test which showed fricatives and place of production to be most affected under water. (SC)

Peer reviewedWipf, Joseph A. – International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching, 1977
A report on a study to identify the relationship between subjects' age and their ability to imitate critical sounds of German. By having 210 American subjects repeat 20 critical German sounds in a non-critical context, a hierarchy of these sounds was established. Methodological conclusions are indicated. (AMH)

Reports a study determining whether significant differences in formant frequency are apparent when chronological age is compared with a measure of physiological age for children during the first six years. (TO)

Kovac, Ceil – 1975
Following a review of related work on intonation, both phonetic and phonemic descriptions of intonation in Italian are presented. Using recordings of radio broadcasts as data, a system of assigning pitch levels to syllables was devised, based on four pitches. The close relationship between stress placement and pitch level was considered. In order…

Standard manuals of Spanish pronunciation recognize that both [+continuant] and [-continuant] surface variants occur for the voiced obstruents/bdg/. Within generative phonology, it has been assumed that the systematic phonemic representation for these voiced obstruents should be [-continuant] /bdg/, with a rule of spirantization converting these…

Shiels-Djouadi, Marie – 1975
This paper examines the phenomenon of final consonant deletion in clusters which do not agree in voicing and compares this phenomenon with clusters sharing the voicing feature. The speech studied is that of Puerto Rican and black Harlem teenagers. The data reported here refutes many of Bailey's (1972) claims. Clusters where voicing is not shared…
