The Audio-Visual unit of the University of Strathclyde has produced a series of pilot programs for television teaching of English as a foreign language. Their study aimed to determine the most effective formats and the type of language learning resulting. A notional syllabus working through communicative situations seemed ideal. (CHK)

In order to use television for teaching English as a second language most effectively, a multimedia system is necessary in which the TV is one attraction. Teachers and students then will have active roles to assist language acquisition. A Canadian example of such a system is discussed. (CHK)

In 1971 the College of the Holy Cross (Minnesota) set up a summer language and cultural program in Cuernavaca, Mexico for their students of Spanish. After intensive grammar in the classroom students are sent out on "survival" situations involving verbal communication with Mexicans in the market place, schools, prisons, etc. (SC)
