Following introduction of a reform program by the Ministry of Culture in the FRG, French has slumped in the upper level gymnasium curriculum. The article reports on work in progress on the preparation of a textbook for elementary Russian. Arguments are advanced for the presentation of highly marked and more differentiated material at an early stage. One aspect of Chinese reading materials, that they tap only passive skills, is discussed; and a proposal is offered for varying a beginning reading Chinese text by using controlled composition, an exercise in which students must rewrite a passage in the target language to emphasize certain structures and vocabulary.
