Brunner, Debra Lynn; Seung, HyeKyeung – Communication Disorders Quarterly, 2009
This literature review examines the present level of evidence in support of communication-based treatments for children with autism spectrum disorders. Goldsmith, Tina R.; LeBlanc, Linda A.; Sautter, Rachael A. – Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, 2007
Skinner's conceptual analysis of language has influenced one model of early and intensive behavioral intervention with children, which incorporates verbal operants including mands, tacts, intraverbals, etc. Many studies have examined the mand and tact relations, with little focus on teaching intraverbal behavior. In the present experiment,…

Spira, Adam P.; Edelstein, Barry A. – Psychological Record, 2007
Behavioral interventions based on operant principles are commonly attempted to manage agitation in older adults with dementia. The extent to which operant conditioning can occur in persons with particular dementias, however, is unclear. The present study involved use of a button-pressing task to evaluate the sensitivity of the responding of older…

Smith, Tristram; And Others – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1995
Treatment of behavioral problems of 3 girls (ages 31-37 months) with Rett's disorder is discussed. Behavioral treatment using operant conditioning principles did little to alter the course of the disorder for these individuals. The one consistent improvement for the girls was a decrease in tantrums. (SW)

Lovaas, O. Ivar; Smith, Tristram – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1991
This response to a paper by Guess and Carr (EC 602 212) on stereotypy and self-injurious behavior in the disabled focuses on (1) potentially misleading statements that may discourage practitioners from operant approaches to stereotypy and self-injury, and (2) strengths and weaknesses of the model compared to existing operant models. (DB)

Peer reviewedVollmer, Timothy R. – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1994
This article discusses problems inherent in the analysis of automatically reinforced behaviors, which are behaviors that are maintained by operant mechanisms independent of the social environment. Four classes of treatment that are compatible with automatic reinforcement are reviewed, including manipulations of establishing operations, sensory…

Kelley, M. E.; Shillingsburg, M.A.; Castro, M. J.; Addison, L. R.; LaRue, R. H., Jr. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 2007
The conceptual basis for many effective language-training programs are based on Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior. Skinner described several elementary verbal operants including mands, tacts, intraverbals, and echoics. According to Skinner, responses that are the same topography may actually be functionally independent. Previous…
