Subramaniam, K.; Sankar, P. V. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
A method of constructing a check digit for nonconventional chemical codes is described. (5 references) (Author)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Data Processing, Documentation, Error Patterns

Romanec, Michael J. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1974
The boundary between two neighboring rings is called the fusion lines, which is enclosed by external segments called arcs. In the code, the separation of fusion line(s) from arcs takes place in such a way that proper matching is achieved. By this procedure, the structure of a compound is recreated. (Author)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Codification, Computers, Data Processing

Feldman, Alfred – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
A Teletype Model 37 machine has been modified for the coding of chemical structures. The coding rate of this model is higher than that of other machines of this type. The rationale for choosing this particupar type of input equipment is presented. (6 references) (Author/SM)
Descriptors: Codification, Data Processing, Equipment, Information Processing

And Others; Eckermann, E. H. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
Almost three million records covering approximately 175,000 chemical compounds and involving multiple disciplines have been recorded in the Army Antimalarial Drug Program. Maximum compartmentalization of files together with a complete method of interfacing files and a unique number system has made it possible to manage this system. (2 references)…
Descriptors: Chemistry, Data Processing, Databases, Information Processing

Rowlett, Russell J.; Tate, Fred A. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
Among other improvements in chemical nomenclature used in the Chemical Registry System, Chemical Abstracts Service intends to standardize the fundamental principles for naming cyclic structures so that procedures for the derivation of ring names can become more amenable to computer generation and translation. (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Chemistry, Computer Programs, Data Processing

Skolnik, Herman – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
The Multiterm system is shown to be a unique concept for producing a multilingual index via computer processing. The new concept has significance for international cooperative programs. (6 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Data Processing, Indexes, Indexing

Skolnik, Herman; Jenkins, William L. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1971
Administrative Terminal Systems (ATS) operations are detailed, the use of ATS for text processing is evaluated in comparison with the IBM Magnetic Tape Selectric Typewriter (MTST), and the importance of the interaction of ATS with computer peripherals is described. (8 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Computer Storage Devices, Data Processing, Evaluation, Information Processing

Deforeit, Huguette; And Others – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
A computer system, named CORA, has been devised for coding chemical structures by fragmentation elements. It has been used to encode Markush formulas in patents according to the Ring codes used in the Ringdoc and Pestdoc services and results in an easy, speedy, reliable and inexpensive method. (4 references) (Author)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Computer Oriented Programs, Data Processing, Information Processing

Frome, Julius – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1972
A formula is given that enables one to determine the parameters for amortizing an information system within a year. The formula is illustrated with three mechanized information systems for patents. The most critical parameter is shown to be indexing time. (7 references) (Author/NH)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Costs, Data Processing, Indexing

And Others; Zipperer, W. C. – Journal of Chemical Documentation, 1973
Minimum, maximum, and average lengths and frequency counts for the data elements in the Chemical Substance and General Subject segments of the Standard Distribution Format (SDF) files distributed by Chemical Abstracts Service are presented. (5 references) (Authors)
Descriptors: Chemical Nomenclature, Data Processing, Databases, Information Processing
