Whitehurst, Teresa – Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities, 2008
The risk factors for young people with intellectual disabilities developing a mental health disorder are higher than those found in the general population, yet training is very rarely available to frontline staff. A recent study in the United Kingdom cited prevalence rates of mental ill health among adults with intellectual disabilities ranging…

PDF pending restorationNational Center for Education Statistics (ED), Washington, DC. – 1995
This data sheet presents statistics relating to education of students with disabilities. Wilton, Keri – Exceptional Child, 1984
Several studies indicate that many disabled children in New Zealand regular classes whom teachers and parents believe require special educational services are not being referred. Simonoff, Emily; Pickles, Andrew; Chadwick, Oliver; Gringras, Paul; Wood, Nicky; Higgins, Siobhan; Maney, Julie-Ann; Karia, Nisha; Iqbal, Huma; Moore, Anne – Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 2006
Background: Mild mental retardation is an enduring and impairing condition. Its prevalence has varied widely across different studies from 0.5 to over 8%, with higher rates in completely ascertained samples. The current study estimates the prevalence of low IQ in the mental retardation range (intellectual disability) in a population sample and…

McKinnon, David H.; McLeod, Sharynne; Reilly, Sheena – Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, 2007
Purpose: The aims of this study were threefold: to report teachers' estimates of the prevalence of speech disorders (specifically, stuttering, voice, and speech-sound disorders); to consider correspondence between the prevalence of speech disorders and gender, grade level, and socioeconomic status; and to describe the level of support provided to…

Peer reviewedBlatt, Burton – Mental Retardation, 1994
This reprint (from a 1961 article) and excerpt (from a 1977 paper) recommend definitions of various terms in the field of mental retardation, such as subaverage, organic retardation, and functional retardation and argue that incidence and prevalence estimates of mental retardation vary so remarkably and change so frequently to fit certain…

van Schrojenstein Lantman-de Valk, H. M. J.; Wullink, M.; van den Akker, M.; van Heurn-Nijsten, E. W. A.; Metsemakers, J. F. M.; Dinant, G. J. – Journal of Intellectual Disability Research, 2006
Background: Current changes in care philosophy and diversity in care arrangements caused the need for a new estimate of the number of people with intellectual disability (ID), based on recent data. Previous estimates were based on client registrations, which was thought unreliable at this time. This manuscript studies the question how many people…

Miles, Tim R. – Electronic Journal of Research in Educational Psychology, 2004
Any figure given for the prevalence of dyslexia must depend on how the word "dyslexia" is defined. There is no point in defining dyslexia as "poor reading"; what is of scientific interest is the syndrome specific to developmental dyslexia, as described by Critchley (1970) and others. Difficulties arise in determining the…

Li, Alicia – TEACHING Exceptional Children, 2009
At least 60% of children with disabilities have multiple disabilities including visual impairments (VI). Because the visual system is neurologically based, any problems of the neurological system will also likely affect vision. The estimated number of students with VI and additional disabilities has increased significantly over the years. Since…

Kaye, H. Stephen; LaPlante, Mitchell P.; Carlson, Dawn; Wenger, Barbara L. – 1996
This abstract summarizes trends in disability rates from 1970-1994 data obtained in the National Health Interview Survey. Trends indicate a gradual rise in the prevalence of disability due to demographic shifts associated with an aging population, as well as a rapid increase that has taken place during the past several years due to a greater…

Peer reviewedNagamitsu, Shinichiro; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1997
A Japanese study measured CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) levels of beta-endorphin in 19 children (ages 4-6) with infantile autism and in 3 children (ages 10-14) with Rett syndrome. In infantile autism, levels did not differ significantly from control participants (n=23). However, levels were significantly higher in those with Rett syndrome. (Author/CR)

Peer reviewedCroen, Lisa A.; Grether, Judith K.; Hoogstrate, Jenny; Selvin, Steve – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2002
This population study of eight California birth cohorts (1987-1994) examined the degree to which improvements in detection and changes in diagnosis contribute to the observed increase in autism prevalence from 5.8 to 14.9 per 10,000. A decreasing prevalence of mental retardation without autism suggests that improvements in detection and changes in…
