Academic advising is one of the most frequently used but poorest quality student services on a university campus. This article presents the theory and rationale for a departmental advising center as an alternative to the faculty advising system. This article describes the structure and process of the staffing conference and discusses some of the resulting benefits that have accrued to staff, students, and the counseling program as a whole.
