Peer reviewedGross, Thomas F.; Mastenbrook, Matthew – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
High state-anxious subjects solved fewer problems than middle or low state-anxious subjects under no memory-aid conditions, and all anxiety groups performed comparably with memory aids. High state-anxious subjects tended to use less focusing strategy when memory aids were unavailable. (Author/CP)

Peer reviewedRittschof, Kent A.; And Others – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1994
One-hundred two undergraduates studied a thematic map and read related text, with the order of presentation varied and half receiving a verbal prime related to the theme. Map-first students recalled more and made more correct inferences. Verbal priming did not affect theme-related recall or inference. (SLD)

Peer reviewedMillsap, Roger E.; Meredith, William – Psychometrika, 1987
The slower progress of semantic memory research is attributed to the difficulties involved in testing the relevant theories. This paper proposes a model for testing such theories using the Continuous Response (CR) task. The model establishes a link between the rate of recall and the semantic relationships among the category items. (JAZ)

Peer reviewedLang, Annie; And Others – Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, 1995
Describes a study of undergraduates that was designed to assess the independent and interactive effects of emotional arousal and emotional valence on viewers' cognitive capacity and memory for television messages. Highlights include emotional processing and memory, emotion and cognitive capacity, pretests and posttests, and hypotheses tested.…

Hodes, Carol L. – 1990
This dissertation presents the results of an investigation of visual mental imagery as a strategy hypothesized to increase the amount of interaction with content material and therefore the level of information processing and acquisition, and to assist information retrieval on posttests. Four treatments were used in a crossed, randomized two by two…

Baggett, Patricia – Educational Technology Reports, 1988
This report describes a procedure for developing multimedia instructions that are "optimized" according to certain criteria, and in particular, compares the effect on performance in building from memory using: (1) interactive videodisc-based assembly instructions or (2) passive videotape instructions. It was found that the group…

Peer reviewedCardinale, Loretta A.; Smith, Charles M. – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 1994
Discussion of the teaching of learning strategies focuses on a study of undergraduates that investigated the effects of comprehension-directed and memory-directed computer-based learning strategy training on the achievement of learning objectives. Treatment of experimental and control groups is explained, and further research is suggested.…
