Future teachers are not getting enough education in area studies nor in practical use of the foreign language. They should be able to converse fulently about the foreign country. A question-answer technique is described that is based on authenticity of form and content and that has applicability at virtually all levels of instruction. After automatic responses, students provide definitions, rephrase content, or express opinions in the second language. (Author/SW)

A technique is described for eliciting true communication in the elementary German classroom which is also applicable to more advanced study. Language instructors at one college devised a program to increase oral proficiency in language students. An oral proficiency test was developed to measure student performance. Results show that since the proficiency test has been required, students make more efforts to increase these skills through study, conversation and language laboratory use.…
