A national survey to which 4,210 board members responded gathered data by geographic region on members' age, ethnic group, sex, income, length of board experience, and opinions on current educational concerns and priorities and on the roles of boards and superintendents in over 20 areas of school governance. A recent poll of 332 university presidents, trustees, faculty, athletic coaches and representatives, and senior women sports administrators found that in intercollegiate athletics, trustees are seen as part of the problem but are also seen as having a leadership role to play.
