Vizcaíno, Diego; Vargas, Victor; Huertas, Adriana – Mathematics Teaching Research Journal, 2023
In this work, a bibliometric analysis of the investigations of the last 54 years focused on the teaching of topology and its applications in the learning of other areas of knowledge was carried out. The articles that appear in the SCOPUS database were taken into account under the search criteria of the words topology and teaching, connected with…

Narintra Mingolo – Higher Education Studies, 2024
This research is a quasi-experimental study with the following objectives: 1) To examine the effectiveness of cooperative learning activities using the TAI technique combined with activity-based learning on the topic of congruence for students at Roi Et Rajabhat University, aiming to achieve the 75/75 efficiency criterion. 2) To compare…

Castro, Paola; Gómez, Pedro; Cañadas, María C. – International Electronic Journal of Mathematics Education, 2022
We characterize the thematic trends of the "Geometry and its Applications Meeting." This meeting is held periodically in Colombia, country in which our study was carried out. We used a taxonomy of key terms specific to mathematics education to code the proceedings of this meeting. The study variables are purpose, educational level,…

Kanbur, Tekerek Birnaz; Argün, Ziya – Pegem Journal of Education and Instruction, 2019
This study examined problem posing situations of pre-service elementary mathematics teachers in dynamic geometry environment by using problem posing strategies. The qualitative method of multiple case study was applied and geometric concepts that participants used for each type of problem posing are examined. Eight participants from 3rd grade…

Gibbons, Alanna – Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, 2019
Maryam Mirzakhani is the first and the only female winner of the Fields Medal since its establishment in 1936. She is arguably one of the greatest mathematicians of our generation. This biographical paper outlines her life and work. Her mathematical theorems and noteworthy accomplishments are just as impressive as her determination, imagination,…

Poon, Kin Keung; Wong, Kwan Lam – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2017
The use of dynamic geometry software (DGS) is becoming increasingly familiar among teachers, but letting students conduct inquiries using computers is still not a welcome idea. In addition to logistics and discipline concerns, many teachers believe that mathematics at the lower secondary level can be learned efficiently through practice alone.…

Laine, A. D. – Australian Senior Mathematics Journal, 2015
There are many geometrical approaches to the solution of the quadratic equation with real coefficients. In this article it is shown that the monic quadratic equation with complex coefficients can also be solved graphically, by the intersection of two hyperbolas; one hyperbola being derived from the real part of the quadratic equation and one from…

Kolar-Begovic, Zdenka, Ed.; Kolar-Šuper, Ružica, Ed.; Jukic Matic, Ljerka, Ed. – Online Submission, 2017
The papers in the monograph address different topics related to mathematics teaching and learning processes which are of great interest to both students and prospective teachers. Some papers open new research questions, some show examples of good practice and others provide more information about earlier findings. The monograph consists of six…

Walwyn, Amy L.; Navarro, Daniel J. – Journal of Problem Solving, 2010
An experiment is reported comparing human performance on two kinds of visually presented traveling salesperson problems (TSPs), those reliant on Euclidean geometry and those reliant on city block geometry. Across multiple array sizes, human performance was near-optimal in both geometries, but was slightly better in the Euclidean format. Even so,…

Obara, Samuel – Australian Senior Mathematics Journal, 2009
This paper presents an investigation by pre-service secondary school teachers in a geometry class of the relationship between the perpendicular distance from the eyeball to the wall (x) and the viewable vertical distance on the wall (y) using a view tube of constant length and diameter. In undertaking the investigation, students used tabular and…

Liljedahl, Peter, Ed.; Oesterle, Susan, Ed.; Allan, Darien, Ed. – Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group, 2012
This submission contains the Proceedings of the 2011 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG), held at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland. The CMESG is a group of mathematicians and mathematics educators who meet annually to discuss mathematics education issues at all levels of learning.…

Shallcross, David C. – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 2005
Ever since the first mariners sailed off the east coast of Scotland the Bell Rock has claimed many vessels and countless lives. Also known as the Inch Cape Rocks they lie 18 km off the coast at Arbroath. Located near the mouth of the Firth of Forth and its important shipping ports these dangerous rocks cover an area some 440 m long and 90 m wide.…

This paper reports the results of student use of a TI-92 graphing calculator to solve algebra and analytic geometry problems in 9th grade Austrian classes. Students who had been trained in using the TI-92 were asked to compute x, given that a right-angled triangle had sides x, x+3, and x+6 in at least three ways, and to document their solution…

Peer reviewedChick, Helen – Australian Mathematics Teacher, 1989
Presents 10 space-related ideas, thoughts, and questions represented on the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) calendar. The ideas are on impossible shapes, fractals, space itself, galaxy, tesselated pigs, spirals, helices, black holes and three-dimensional surfaces, tesseracts, and mobius bands. (YP)

Peer reviewedTarmizi, Rohani Ahmad; Sweller, John – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1988
Five geometry experiments with 127 Australian high school students found that guidance provided in a format requiring attention to two sources of information resulted in performance no better than that on conventional problems. A format not requiring split attention resulted in the superiority of worked examples over conventional problems. (SLD)
