Peer reviewedHoward, Ann; Carroll, Robert M. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1977
The Activity Vector Analysis is a short personality measure, widely used in industry for personnel selection, placement and assessment. This paper questions the statistical basis of the measure as it has appeared in the literature. Recommendations are made for revision of the measure and for resolution of theoretical incongruencies. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Correlation, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Measurement Techniques
Peer reviewedHaertel, Edward H. – Psychometrika, 1990
Relations between latent trait and latent class models for item response data are examined. Conditions are given for two-latent class and two-parameter normal ogive models to agree, and relations between their item parameters are presented. Results are illustrated with data from the Law School Admission Test. (SLD)
Descriptors: Comparative Analysis, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Item Response Theory
Peer reviewedBrowne, Michael W. – Psychometrika, 1992
Structural models that yield circumplex inequality patterns are reviewed, focusing on a model developed by T. W. Anderson (1960). A modification is proposed to this model to allow for negative correlations. This model may be reparameterized as a factor analysis model with nonlinear constraints on the factor loadings. (SLD)
Descriptors: Correlation, Equations (Mathematics), Factor Analysis, Graphs
Peer reviewedMeulman, Jacqueline J. – Psychometrika, 1992
The distance approach to nonlinear multivariate analysis proposed by J. J. Meulman (1986) is reviewed. Several generalizations are discussed by combining features from the conventional multivariate analysis approach, which seeks weighted sums of variables, with the alternative approach, which seeks to fit distances. (SLD)

Peer reviewedAvison, William R. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1978
Path analytic techniques for assessing the validity of indicators in multitrait-multimethod matrices represent improvements on Campbell and Fiske's early procedures for testing for validity. The diagnosis of indicator ills by means of confirmatory factor analysis is especially useful. An empirical example of these techniques is presented.…

Peer reviewedDavison, Mark L. – Psychometrika, 1977
A model is presented which allows for the prediction of relationships among stimuli when stimulus responses are linearly related to squared distances between stimulus scale values and person scores along a latent continuum. Applications to developmental and attitudinal data are discussed. (Author/JKS)
Descriptors: Attitudes, Factor Analysis, Mathematical Models, Measurement
Peer reviewedTen Berge, Jos M. F. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1972
In the present article it is argued that the Least Squares Simplex Data Matrix Solution does not deal adequately with difficulty factors inasmuch as the theoretical foundation is insufficient. (Author/CB)

Peer reviewedNesselroade, John R. – Psychometrika, 1972
The longitudinal factor analysis" model, which uniquely resolves factors from two occasions of data representing the same persons measured on the same test battery, is shown to be derivable by application of canonical correlation procedures to factor scores. (Author)

Peer reviewedCudeck, Robert – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1982
Many models have been proposed for examining factors from several batteries of tests. A model for such an analysis is presented which allows for maintaining the distinction among batteries. A discussion of the computational procedures is given, and examples are provided. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedThompson, Bruce; Pitts, Murray C. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1981
Adequacy coefficients can be derived by calculating the cosines of the angles between factors' actual and theoretically expected locations within factor space. The use of adequacy coefficients during instrument development is discussed. The development of an instrument to measure thinking interests provides a heuristic framework for the…

Peer reviewedMcDonald, Roderick P. – Psychometrika, 1981
An expression is given for weighted least squares estimators of oblique common factors of factor analyses, constrained to have the same covariance matrix as the factors they estimate. A proof of the uniqueness of the solution is given. (Author/JKS)

Peer reviewedMuthen, Bengt; Hofacker, Charles – Psychometrika, 1988
A model is proposed for empirically testing the appropriateness of using tetrachoric correlations for a set of dichotomous variables. A testing method is proposed that uses information from trivariate marginal tables. Assumptions are tested with real and simulated data. (SLD)

Peer reviewedGibbons, Robert D.; Hedeker, Donald R. – Psychometrika, 1992
An item-response model for binary response data exhibiting the bi-factor structure is derived, and a practical parameter estimation method is developed. The model, which provides an alternate to the traditional conditionally independent unidimensional item response theory model, is illustrated with an example from psychiatric research. (SLD)

Peer reviewedWothke, Werner; Browne, Michael W. – Psychometrika, 1990
The composite direct-product model for the multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix is reparamaterized as a second-order factor analysis model. This process facilitates the use of widely available computer programs--LISREL and LISCOMP--for fitting the model. If bounds on phi and theta are not imposed to avoid inadmissible values, convergence problems…
