Measuring for Success: AIHEC's Efforts to Improve Data Collection and Reporting
Hanson, Jana M.; Moore, Erica J.; Morseau, Amber; Taylor, Darius D.
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v34 n3 Spr 2023
The U.S. Department of Education has required educational collection and reporting. For postsecondary institutions, this requirement has evolved from the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS), which was used from the 1960s to the 1980s, to the Integrated postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) (Aliyeva, Cody, & Low, 2018). The U.S. Department of Education requires annual IPEDS reporting on broad categories of institutional information to provide basic statistics to educational agencies, researchers, and others interested in the data. These statistics include institutional prices, financial aid data, enrollment, admissions requirements, and retention and graduation rates. In addition, IPEDS provides information on programs or majors offered, veterans and service members receiving aid, athletics, accreditation, campus security/safety, and educational loan default rates. IPEDS data is then pulled into a web-based tool called College Navigator. This tool was designed to summarize institutional information for students, parents, high school counselors, and others to help compare over 7,500 postsecondary institutions. This article describes the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) and its constituent tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) have collected and synthesized data using the American Indian Measures for Success Key Indicator System (AIMS AKIS). Data compiled over the past 15 years highlights the growth and changes at TCUs. In addition, the results provide guidance for updates to AIMS AKIS and future TCU data needs.
