What Works Clearinghouse Rating
Lam, Kristen S. L.; Aman, Michael G. – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 2007
A key feature of autism is restricted repetitive behavior (RRB). Despite the significance of RRBs, little is known about their phenomenology, assessment, and treatment. The Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R) is a recently-developed questionnaire that captures the breadth of RRB in autism. To validate the RBS-R in an independent sample, we…

Arthur, Michael – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 2000
In this response to critiques (Mudford, Hogg and Roberts 1997, 1999) of the use of behavior states in research involving individuals with mental retardation, it is argued that the work on behavioral state analysis by Robert D. Guess has contributed to the field at the practical, empirical, and theoretical levels. (Contains references.) (CR)

Peer reviewedPark, Hyun-Sook; And Others – Journal of Experimental Education, 1990
The reliability of visual inspection in single-case research was investigated by determining agreement among 5 judges visually inspecting 44 graphs depicting behavior from baseline to intervention. Agreement between visual inspection and statistical procedures was determined. Implications for single-case research are discussed. (SLD)

Guess, Doug; Roberts, Sally; Rues, Jane – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 2000
This article critiques the research methodology used by Mudford, Hogg, and Roberts (1999) that resulted in a failure to achieve inter-observer agreement on adults with mental retardation when using an experimental, 13-category behavior state code. Arguments are provided on why their videotape study does not meet requirements of acceptable…

Realmuto, George M.; Wescoe, Sibyl – Child Abuse and Neglect: The International Journal, 1992
This study investigated whether 13 young children presented with anatomically correct dolls would exhibit behaviors that professionals (n=14) could agree on to determine the child's abuse status. The study concluded that experienced professionals agree poorly with each other about a child's abuse status and that sexually anatomically correct dolls…

Littlefield, John; And Others – 1992
A four-level taxonomy is proposed to define the usefulness of rater written comments for supporting letters of recommendation. The taxonomy is used to classify comments on 220 rating forms by 25 raters from two surgery departments regarding performance by third-year medical students. Written comments were classified by the following taxonomy: (1)…

Peer reviewedTinsley, Barbara J.; And Others – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1997
The convergent validity of peer, self, and teacher methods of assessing youths' risk propensity and the relation of these measures to health risk behavior were studied with 436 elementary and junior high school students. Findings demonstrate low congruence between rater sources. Prediction depended on behavior assessed and grade level. (SLD)
