Systematic and chance similarities between Thai and English are illustrated and discussed. The argument is made that a comparative analysis, which highlights the systematic similarities underlying the two languages, is as important in second language pedagogy as the more commonly found contrastive analysis. A description of a study which tried to establish the sequence of language development in a language other than English (Farsi) and to measure the syntactic complexity of the first language against that of the second. Describes an experiment comparing the monolingual and bilingual approaches to foreign language teaching. Two 6th grade classes in English were taught for nine class periods, one by the monolingual and one by the bilingual method. A slight advantage in favor of the monolingual method is reported.
