Epstein, Michael H.; And Others – Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1977
The reliability of the Matching Familiar Figures Test, a measure of reflection-impulsivity, with 20 impulsive learning disabled boys (mean age 10 years) was investigated. nAuthor)

Swanson, H. Lee – Journal of Communication Disorders, 1987
Effects of self instruction training on the communication skills of a profoundly hearing impaired 10-year-old child were studied. Training included modeling a series of problem solving steps. Results indicated that self-instruction was immediately effective on pragmatic behaviors and that the influence on semantic behaviors was gradual. (Author/DB)

Gholson, Barry; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1987
Explores third and sixth grade children's acquisition and analogical transfer of the base of a relatively complex problem. One group at each grade level received two analogs of a scheduling problem; other groups received only one analog or a transfer task. After criterial performance, all children were transferred to an isomorphic analog and…

Callahan, Leroy G.; Charles, Desiree – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1985
Previous studies indicate that many early elementary school children have the misconception that whole number subtraction is a commutative operation. The degree and character of this subtraction error was investigated in this longitudinal study. Results obtained from three groups of students with different number abilities provided further…

Woods, Claire – Australian Journal of Reading, 1984
Describes the place play has in school learning. Discusses play and problem-solving ability, play and symbolizing, and learning by experimenting, and recognizes the need for a learning theory that includes recognition of play in learning development. (CRH)

Severeide, Rebecca C.; Pizzini, Edward L. – Science and Children, 1984
Reports research findings on the relationship between play and science as complementary aspects of problem solving. The playful approach and the science approach are compared along with skills and attitudes necessary for solving scientific problems. Research findings and suggested actions on play in the classroom are summarized. (BC)

Holmes, Betty C. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1985
The study examined whether teaching 24 elementary disabled readers a structured inferencing strategy using materials sequentially arranged from easy to more difficult would improve their ability to answer inferential questions. Results suggested that disabled readers' apparent problems in answering inferential qustions may exist because of a lack…
