Ajay Shankar Tiwari; Kaushal Kumar Bhagat – Australasian Journal of Educational Technology, 2024
This study examined the impact of augmented reality (AR) on engineering education, focusing on spatial visualisation skills and cognitive load in an engineering drawing course. The research is based on cognitive load theory and spatial visualisation frameworks. It compares three AR methods--marker-based (MBAR), markerless (MLAR) and Web-based…

Schettig, Erik J.; Kelly, Daniel P.; Ernst, Jeremy V.; Clark, Aaron C. – Journal of Technology Education, 2022
Success in post-secondary engineering graphics courses in technology and engineering often relies on self-efficacy, academic success, and mental rotation abilities. Using a facilitative instructor model, the Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) team applied active learning modules as supplemental material at two post-secondary…

Cohen, Cheryl; Bairaktarova, Diana – Engineering Design Graphics Journal, 2018
First-year engineering (FYE) students are routinely screened for spatial ability, with the goals of predicting retention in the major and identifying those who need supplementary spatial instruction. Psychometric tests used for such screenings are often domain-general measures that lack diagnostic information to inform remedial instruction. A new…

Peer reviewedMetcalfe, J. Alban; Stratford, B. – Journal of Mental Deficiency Research, 1981
There was some evidence to support the suggestion that certain types of mentally handicapped children attend to singe cues rather than to total configuration. There was also evidence of perceptual distortion resulting in reversal and attraction to "good form." (Author)

Peer reviewedPillay, Hitendra – Learning and Instruction, 1998
The effects of four different instructional formats (orthographic drawing, isometric drawing, physical model, and isometric and physical model together) on learning outcomes and strategies for spatial tasks were studied with 40 secondary students. Findings indicate that physical models cause the least extraneous cognitive load. (SLD)
