Green, Rebecca – Journal of Documentation, 1995
Presents criteria for an effective syntagmatic relator system and describes how conceptual syntagmatic relationships are expressed in natural language, commenting on the adequacy of such expressions for document retrieval systems. Only one type of expression, a gestalt structure, represented as a frame, conforms to the criteria. (Author/JKP)

Heine, M. H. – Journal of Documentation, 1995
Proposes a new rule system and notation that supports the characterization of a document based on its structure or architecture (primarily linear, paper-copy media). Examples of the application of the notation are provided. (Author/JKP)

Levery, Francis – Informacion Bibliografica Educativa, 1971
Documentation centers are needed to handle the vast amount of scientific and technical information currently being issued. Such centers should be concerned both with handling inquiries in a particular field and with producing a general catalog of current information. Automatic analysis of texts by computers will be the best way to handle material,…

Foskett, D. J. – 1973
The field of education serves as the basis for this discussion on the use of categories in a thesaurus for information processing and documentation purposes. The author briefly shows how a number of writers concerned with the structure of the field of education, as well as makers of classification schemes, have commented on the value of setting up…

Baker, F. T.; Williams, John H., Jr. – 1968
To support studies in automatic indexing, classification and extracting, a general purpose frequency program was developed to further theoretical and practical understanding of text word distributions. While the program is primarily designed for counting strings of character-oriented data, it can be used without change for counting any items which…

de Regt, W. F. – 1974
This paper on Thesauri in Educational Documentation attempts to show by description and analysis the difference in application between thesauri and classification schemes as indexing languages in documentary information systems, and from this to infer possible future developments. First, the differences between the pre-coordination and…

Earl, L. L.; And Others – 1971
The development of automatic indexing, abstracting, and extracting systems is investigated. Part I describes the development of tools for making syntactic and semantic distinctions of potential use in automatic indexing and extracting. One of these tools is a program for syntactic analysis (i.e., parsing) of English, the other is a dictionary of…

Williams, John H., Jr. – 1971
The report very briefly summarizes the research performed during the contract period March 1, 1964, to February 28, 1971. The emphasis of the research was on the discovery and development of techniques for automatically indexing and classifying documents. The research was limited to statistical techniques rather than semantic or syntactic. A…

AVRAM, HENRIETTE D.; CURRAN, ANNE T. – 1967
IMPLEMENTATION OF A NATIONAL OR REGIONAL NETWORK OF BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION WILL REQUIRE A BASIC STANDARD FOR THE IDENTIFICATION AND REPRESENTATION OF THE ELEMENTS IN THE DATA BASE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS SPECIAL PROJECT, DONE FOR THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON MACHINE INPUT RECORDS, WAS TO PROVIDE THE SUBCOMMITTEE WITH BACKGROUND INFORMATION WHICH WOULD BE…

Lewis, Kathleen P., Comp. – 1968
This preliminary bibliography was prepared as a listing of background materials for use in connection with the development of an experimental thesaurus for the language sciences. The first half of the bibliography contains references to 68 sources of information on indexing materials in the language sciences. Actual indexes, lists of specialized…

Howder, Murray L. – 1973
People who develop information into a consumable form seem at times to work in a vacuum, failing to consider the potential users. Some helpful tips for preparing documents for easy retrieval and use, based upon guidelines followed in the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) system, are presented. The three major areas of evaluation are…

HEWER, DAVID J. – 1966
SEARCH STRATEGIES WHICH CAN BE CONTINUOUSLY MODIFIED WERE DEVELOPED FOR COORDINATE SEARCHING SYSTEMS. USING THE FILES OF THE NASA TECHNOLOGY UTILIZATION PROGRAM AT THE KNOWLEDGE AVAILABILITY SYSTEMS CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED OF THE RETRIEVAL OF RELEVANT DOCUMENTS BY BOTH MANUAL AND MACHINE METHODS FOR FIVE QUESTIONS…

Libbey, M. A.; Blum, A. R. – 1968
The identification of information elements can provide an important tool for the systematic development of an information system design. A state-of-the-art survey reveals mounting recognition and interest in the problem, a considerable history of prior efforts, but no well-defined methodology. A study in the context of a national information…
