Cody, Roger – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
Presented is an empirical confirmation of clustering behavior that has been proposed as a conjecture in the literature; namely, that document ordering is more significant in an algorithm using a full document space search, rather than a search of just unclustered documents, each time a density test is performed. Yager, Ronald R.; Rybalov, Alexander – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1998
Investigates the problem of fusing collections of documents provided by multiple information retrieval systems. A parameterized approach is suggested in which a parameter determines how the documents in the individual collections are interleaved to form a fused list of documents. (Author/LRW)

Feinman, R. D.; Kwok, K. L. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973
A study was undertaken to classify mechanically a document collection using the free-language words in titles and abstracts of physics research papers. Using a clustering algorithm, results were obtained which closely duplicated clusters obtained by previous experiments with citations. A brief comparison is made with a traditional manual…

Wilensky, Robert – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 2000
Discussion of the influence of computer technology on documentation focuses on ways in which digital libraries might enable spontaneous collaboration that does not require mutual administrative commitment. Describes a document model called multivalent documents that is used with annotations, discusses the information infrastructure, and presents…

Heine, M. H. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1974
Swets' theory of information retrieval allows the threads of document weighting formulae, probabilistic measures of effectiveness, and management theory, to be woven into a coherent pattern. Benefits are: the beginnings of a quantitative description of retrieval languages; destinction between retrieval systems and language; and question generality…

Schultz, Wallace L.; Schultz, Claire K. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1971
This brief history of a living worker in the vineyards of documentation is acknowledge to be only a description of relevant aspects of a very active life and in no sense an assessment of his work. (Author)

Salminen, Airi; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
Describes the development of a methodology for document analysis based on the RASKE ("Rakenteisten Asiakirjastandardien Kehittaminen") project which is studying legislative documents produced in the Finnish government and parliament. Topics include initial results; main phases of the analysis; domain definition; object, state, and…

Barnard, David T.; Ide, Nancy M. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), an international collaboration aimed at producing a common encoding scheme for complex texts, examines the requirement for generality versus the requirement to handle specialized text types. Discusses how documents and users tax the limits of fixed schemes requiring flexible extensible encoding to support…

Sengupta, Arijit; Dillon, Andrew – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1997
Presents a method for augmenting a Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) document repository with database functionality. Introduces an implementation method for a complex-object modeling technique, and describes interface techniques tailored for text databases and concepts for a Structured Document Database Management System (SDDBMS)…

Everett, Daniel M.; Cater, Steven C. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1992
Explains the use of a topological structure to examine the closeness between documents in retrieval systems and analyzes the topological structure of a vector-space model, a fuzzy-set model, an extended Boolean model, a probabilistic model, and a TIRS (Topological Information Retrieval System) model. Proofs for the results are appended. (17…

Buckland, Michael K. – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1991
Raises fundamental questions about the scope of information science and information retrieval, and illustrates how it has evolved over the last 60 years. The work of European documentalists is described, the terminology of multimedia is examined, and image handling is discussed as a method of focusing on representations other than text. (12…

Bartell, Brian T.; And Others – Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1995
Discussion of the failure of individual keywords to identify conceptual content of documents in retrieval systems highlights Metric Similarity Modeling, a method for creating vector space representation of documents based on modeling target interdocument similarity values. Semantic relatedness, latent semantic indexing, an indexing and retrieval…
