Accessibility on the Hudson River
Exceptional Parent, v40 n7 p18-20 Jul 2010
This article describes how Beverly and Martin Ryfa, working with an architect who specializes in accessible design, were able to build a house that is handicap accessible for their 9-year-old daughter, Danielle, who suffered an intraventricular hemorrhage when she was three days old. The article describes the features of their house that make their lives easier: (1) A residential elevator with automatic door and gate opener; (2) Accommodations for a future ceiling track lift system; (3) A special kitchen island at a lower height with a roll-under sink with automatic faucet and a below-counter microwave; (4) An open floor plan great room and dining room; (5) A therapy room; (6) An accessible powder room; (7) Eight accessible entrances for emergency egress from every first-floor room; and (8) Exterior accessible features include extra wide and level sidewalks, a large patio and in-ground swimming pool accessible via a roll-in shallow end.
