Projected here is an underlying structure for successive restrictive relative clauses. Observed are the principles of pronominalization determined by "command," such structure being notably different from that for successive nonrestrictive clauses. Evidence has been seen that certain variations in surface structure arise from selection between identical elements rather than from movement. Evidence has also been seen that one variation results from bypassing a structure which is later recovered. These facts seem to indicate that movement of elements is not the proper analogy to use in expressing the derivation of natural sentences from underlying phrase markers. One should rather think of a scanner passing over the nodes of an unchanging tree in varying but prescribed orders--selecting, abridging, and incorporating large structures in small, with the particular powers of coalescing data from nodes into words, of back-tracking to recover bypassed material, and of retracing with the freedom to take different options on a second pass.
