Bounds are obtained for a coefficient proposed by Kaiser as a measure of average correlation and the coefficient is given an interpretation in the context of reliability theory. It is suggested that the root-mean-square intercorrelation may be a more appropriate measure of degree of relationships among a group of variables. (Author)

Shows that the Harris factors of R have psychometric properties similar to those discussed by Kaiser and Caffrey (1965) and Bentler (1968). Specifically it is shown that the Harris factors of R maximize a lower-bound to the reliability of a composite measure derived by Guttman (1945). (Author/RC)

A computer program which creates and stores a cumulative item covariance matrix upon each administration of an instrument is described. Two indices of profile reliability are shown to be equivalent in terms of the individual independent canonical composites; however, because of different weighting procedures, they yield different overall indices of profile reliability. Three correlation matrices (PEARSON, POLYCHORIC, and TOBIT) were used to obtain reliability estimates on ordered polytomous variable models.
