Bakbergenuly, Ilyas; Hoaglin, David C.; Kulinskaya, Elena – Research Synthesis Methods, 2020
In random-effects meta-analysis the between-study variance ([tau][superscript 2]) has a key role in assessing heterogeneity of study-level estimates and combining them to estimate an overall effect. For odds ratios the most common methods suffer from bias in estimating [tau][superscript 2] and the overall effect and produce confidence intervals…

Brown, Morton B.; Benedetti, Jacqueline K. – Psychometrika, 1977
Estimates of the mean and standard deviation of the tetrachoric correlation are compared with their expected values in several two by two tables. Significant bias in the mean is found when the minimum cell frequency is less than five. Three formulas for the standard deviation are discussed. (Author/JKS)

Smith, Philip L.; Luecht, Richard M. – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1992
The implications of serially correlated effects on the results of generalizability analyses are discussed. Simulated data are provided that demonstrate the biases that serially correlated effects introduce into the results. Serial correlation in measurement effects can have a marked influence on the impression of the dependability of measurement…

Buja, Andreas; Eyuboglu, Nermin – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1992
Use of parallel analysis (PA), a selection rule for the number-of-factors problem, is investigated from the viewpoint of permutation assessment through a Monte Carlo simulation. Results reveal advantages and limitations of PA. Tables of sample eigenvalues are included. (SLD)

Graham, John W.; Collins, Nancy L. – Multivariate Behavioral Research, 1991
Common approaches to examining the relationship between multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data and variables outside the MTMM data are compared: averaging various means of each trait and estimating LISREL computer program models, and estimating only relationships between MTMM traits and the outside variables. Problems of correlational bias are…

Quinn, Jimmy L. – 1978
A logistic model was used to generate data to serve as a proxy for an immediate retest from item responses to a fourth grade standardized reading comprehension test of 45 items. Assuming that the actual test may be considered a pretest and the proxy data may be considered a retest, the effect of regression was investigated using a percentage of…

Vasu, Ellen S.; Elmore, Patricia B. – 1975
The effects of the violation of the assumption of normality coupled with the condition of multicollinearity upon the outcome of testing the hypothesis Beta equals zero in the two-predictor regression equation is investigated. A monte carlo approach was utilized in which three differenct distributions were sampled for two sample sizes over…

Webster, William J.; And Others – 1996
Five issues relative to the use of different Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) models to identify effective schools and teachers were examined using data from all students in the Dallas (Texas) public schools in grade 3 in 1994 and grade 4 in 1995. OLS models using first- and second-order interactions produced…

Ethington, Corinna A. – 1986
This study examined the effect of type of correlation matrix on the robustness of LISREL maximum likelihood and unweighted least squares structural parameter estimates for models with categorical manifest variables. Two types of correlation matrices were analyzed; one containing Pearson product-moment correlations and one containing tetrachoric,…

Yap, Kim Onn – 1979
The accuracy with which regression models estimate treatment effects is dependent upon a number of conditions. The stability of the regression line (a function of sample size and correlation between pretest and posttest) is said to be the most important of these conditions. The utility of regression models is proportional to the size of the…

Linn, Robert L.; Werts, Charles E. – 1971
Failure to consider errors of measurement when using partial correlation or analysis of covariance techniques can result in erroneous conclusions. Certain aspects of this problem are discussed and particular attention is given to issues raised in a recent article by Brewar, Campbell, and Crano. (Author)

Yen, Wendy M. – 1979
Three test-analysis models were used to analyze three types of simulated test score data plus the results of eight achievement tests. Chi-square goodness-of-fit statistics were used to evaluate the appropriateness of the models to the four kinds of data. Data were generated to simulate the responses of 1,000 students to 36 pseudo-items by…

Magidson, Jay; Sorbom, Dag – 1980
Evaluations of social programs based upon quasi-experimental designs are typically plagued by problems of nonequivalence between the experimental and comparison group prior to the experiment. In such settings it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to isolate the effects of the program from the confounding effects associated with the…
